BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEW BRIGHTON. Tho Xew Brighten Borough Council met' last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble), and Crs. J. H. Shaw, F. Ward, E. A. Leave;-, It. Snell, H. A. Glasson, J. •Scott, E. A. Langford, W. E. Gahagan. An apology was received from Cr. F. Scott.

On the motion of the Mayor, a resolution was passed conveying tho sympathy of the Council with tho relatives of tho iato Station Ofecr Noblctt, of the City Fire Brigade. Tho Pensions Department, -wrote that tho matter of poniions for .victims of infantile paralysis would receive considei&tion when tho qu<"stion of amending the Pension Act was under review.

The Waimairi Council wrote stating that it was agreeablo to contribute one-third of tho cost of tho formation of Beach road from Racecourse road to tha Esplanade, provided tho proportion did not exceed £1 a chain, hut could not soo ils way u- take, any steps in tho matter of reconstruction of Racecourse road at present. The Municipal Electricity Department forwarded invoices for £23 9s sd, being cost of installing temporary .lighting in tho Sports Ground. Suitable fittings could not bo obtained in New Zealand.

The Tramway Board advised that it was prepared to lend the road "roller for work on tho Esplanade at full cost and to put in a drain to take the storm water from the Usplana.de tracks. Tho flcjall road roller was not for sale. >

SUMNER. The Sumner Borough. Council met last evening. In the absence of tho Mayor, Cr. C. M. Itoswell presided. Thoso present were: Cis. H. Yv\ Harris, C. I. Denham, A. Holdcn, E. A. Johnson, F. C. Cooper, B. J. Ager. An apology for absence was received irom Cr. Tutill.

The Standing Committee submitted the following ieoort:-For the month, cf May gas manufactured was 1,066,160 cubic feet, an increase of 273,360 cubic feet on the corresponding month of 1924. Two new connexions ha<i< been made. Six new consumers had been attached to the reticulation. The new switchboard for Shag Bock Station had been completed. The Quantity of water pumped ri9 3,800,000 gallons, of which 426,01)0 gallons had been repumped to Clifton reservoir. The lighting manager reported that during the etorm on the 13th inst., a. tree at the foot of the Lytteiton Hi'l had been blown down, carrying away two poles and shifting the wires brick to the bridge fin "VYakcße'd avenue. The motor nt the Gasworka had been burnt oat ani thirtyfivs street lamps had had to be replscod. The manager recommended that .a new motor and overload relay be purchased at n cost of £2O. It was recommended that the foreman's suggestion for tha drainage of storm water at the ond of Alexander terrace bo approved. The financial statement for May flhowej a dr. tank balance of £745 Fa 3d. It was decided to request Jtessrs Montgomerie, Neilson, Edmunds r.nd Co. to put in hand r.t once the new eowage tankat Clifton, with a view to relieving the tank at Grafton street.

It was agreed that -the arrangements mtb the Motor Inspector bo temporarily discontinued, and that rigorous steps be taken to put a st:p to speeding through tho borough. ASHBURTON. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening. Present—The ilayor (Mr It. Galbraith) and Crs. E. E. Dunlop, "W. H. Woods, J. Watson, W. G. Hillier, W. H. Robinson, V. W. Seldon, J. Donn, It. A. Collins, J. W. Bowdon, It. Kerr, and i\ Z. D. Forriman.

Mrs Massey wroto thanking the Council for tho beautiful floral trioute sent in memory of the late Priino Minister. The Mount R-utt Itoad Board wrote appreciatively of the CcuncJ'e action in lending tiro equipment ior use in Methven. The secretary (Mr 11. H. Pawson) waa pleased to inform tho Council that steps >o form a brigade had already been made, and it was\ hoped soon to have matters in ..orking order. James Donn, East street,, was granted a license to store dangerous goods. Tho financial statement showed that the receipts since last meeting totalled £153 i e lid. The Advance Ashburkm AESocia-tion wa3 granted permission to proceed witb treeplanting on the South-east bolt. Cr. Watson said it was intended to secure each tree, and any failure would bo replaced. Thero would bo 40 feet between each row of trees and. 30 feet between each row and the kerbing. Ksch tree would be not les.3 than eight feet high w.hen planted. The tries would be all of the same variety.

Tho question of a site for the County war memorial wag brought up by the Mayer, who eaid he 'thought the matter should be referred to the .Reserves Committee to furnish a report after having conferred with the Memorial Committee. Cr. Dunlop did not favour deferring tho matter further, because Councillors had had two weeks since the committee's lettsr fii received to consider tho matter.

After a short discussion, tho Slayor'a suggestion was adopted.

Tho Boroujh Inspector reported that Dr. Telford had inspected the water-race on tht AHord Forest road, about which "there htd been a complaint' from <he County Council. Dr. Telford said he thought the rate showed no sign ci being: offensive or dangerous to the public health. He had said that there was no catuo for alarm with the present volumo of water And tho few houses that were draining into it. It was decided to write to the County Council slating that the report of the borough inspector did not justify the allegations made and there was no seed for any action. The Town Clerk waa instructed to vrrrU to the local schoolmasters asking them to request tho scholars to refrain from throwing rubbish into the ice in the Domain.
