PHILLIPSTOWN.

CHILDRESS PLAYGROUND. Cr. I). G. Sullivan. M.P., proposed the following motion at the meeting of the City Council last night:—"That the Eeserves Committee be instructed .to take the necessary steps to acquire an area. of land about one acre in extent in Phillipstown for the purpose of a children's. playground."

Cr. Sullivan said the area was one. of the most congested in New Zealand, and a playground for the children was a vital necessity.. The area in question contained 715. houses, which represented a population of 357i>, of which 1000 would be children. JTcarly 900 children the Phillipstown School. There wa.s..no3:eereation ground-in the locality, and the children had to play,-on the roads. There was a vacant section,of land near' the school which could be acquired, for the purpose,; and the opportunity, should not be lost. .. The motion was seconded by Cr... E. McCombs.

Gr. W. E. Leadley said the Council had several reserves east - of the avenue.

Cr. Sullivan: Nowhere near the Phillipstown area. •■ . •

Cr. Leadley said the whole matter should be referred to the Eeserves Committee. The committee should not be tied down to one particular piece of land.

Cr. C. T. Aschman supported Cr. Sullivan's proposal, and said the Council should acquire the necessary land for the children's playground as speedily as possible. . . "

Cr. E. H. Andrews said the Bcserv<s Committee should have the opportunity of considering the matter. The committee could act promptly. Cr. Sullivan withdrew his motion in favour of Cr. Leadley's amendment referring the proposal" to the Eeserves Committee; and" the amendment was carried.
