The members of the Hagley Ladies' Club will play a medal match to-morrow afternoon for a prize presented by Mrs "William Nicholls. I'laycrs are to choose their opponents.
A trophy lias been presented to the CJhristchureh Golf Club by Mr J. O. Jameson, to be competed for by players of fifty years of age and over 5a a. bogey handicap match, to be played at Shirley in August, the exact date to be announced later. Considerable interest, is already being shown in this event by the "veterans" and a keen contest is looked for.
The Match Committee of the Shirley Club has started a series of Thursday events for mid-week members and other players who wish to take part in them. The first will be played next Thursday afternoon, when the event will be a four-ball, best ball bogey handicap. Post entries "Tt-ill be received and the usual entrance fee charged. Players will arrange their own partners and opponents and play may begin at any time after 12 o'clock.
For the third time in his golfing career. E. C. Kirk, the genial chairman of the New Zealand Golf Council, has holed his teo shot for a "holc-in-one.' lie paid the usual penalty at the Hutt a, week ago, says "Baffv" in the Wellington "Evening Post," for putting down his tee shot at the temporary 18th, a brilliant mashie shot that was in the hole all the way. Three holes-in-onc are regarded somewhat phenomenal, but at the Hutt Mr Kirk's finest hole will always be the 2 he got at the prcsc.it sixteenth. It is quite unusual for this hole to be reached in two, and 6's are more frequent than 4's at it.
It is probable that some changes in the dates of later events on the programme of the Shirley Club will have to be made to make it possible to play the Walker and Ilall team match on September sth or September 12th, the days provided by the donors for the playing of the event. 'Probably the Wardrop Cleek, scheduled for Saturday, August 15th, tfill be advanced to Thursday, August 13th. The'first qualifying round of the club championship can then be played on August lotli, and the following events, on the programme, advanced accordingly, and thus provide an open date in • September. I understand the committee is now considering such an alteration.
In using the mashic, when, you address the ball, be careful to sink your wrists. This action brings the leftwrist below the right, and so gives the mind the impression that a left-hand blow is intended, a very useful conviction for the short approaches. Tlieii, get the feel of the club into your hands and fingers, and while you are getting this sensitiveness into your fingers look up the course, mark the place where you intend to pitch, and form a, mental picture of the shot. Never hit' anywhere, and never hit anyhow. Presß the heel of the club on the ground, and fix in your mind the idea that the heel is going to strike the ground a decisive blow—the heel, not the toe.—J. 11. Taylor. '
