CYRENA ENQUIRY. DEFICIENT LOG RECORDS. frxzss ASSOCIATION TZLXGBAU.} WANGANUI, June 2G. Tho Magistrate made tlie following statement during the Cyrena, enquiry today: "If the oval evidence, of Capt'a'in Pateraon and liis officers is to bo accepted—and we do not -wish to say we do not accept it may be considered proved that the ship's draught was approximately 16ft (Sin. We are of opinion that this evidence should ho supported by documentary evidence in the ship's logs in a> form to put it beyond) doubt. On this point we aro of opinion that these records are net satisfactory, and ehow somo evidence of slackness. Tho lo? books have not followed tho instructions, and do not give tho help they should." , His Worship referred to tho printed instructions in tho log, a clause reading "Scrap logs are always looked upon by Judges ana arbitrators in a caso of litigation or arbitration as of the highest importance. The entries therein should be brief but accurate as to time and order."- . Continuing, his Worship said:_ The log books have not followed these instructions, and therefore do not give the help that they should. Further, tho production of an accurate line and records of evidence taken after the grounding would have afforded proof that the stranding was duo to a shortage of water, and not to excess of draught. As the case now stands, the evidence on this point is not satisfactory, and tends to leave a doubt on. the point."
