COMPETITIONS CONTINUED.
HEAVY SCORING. * Although tho weather was good for Saturday's games, the heavy grounds and greasy ball detracted from good play. The senior competition entered on its second round, and some of the matches produced remarkably heavy scores. The positions of the teams in the championship is shown in the following tables:—
Bangers (6) v. Lyttelton 2. There was a fair crowd of spectators at English Park to ivitness the match between Rangers and Lyttelton. The ground was heavy, but: play was fast and interesting throughout. I yttelton kicked off, and opened an offensive down the centre with Greenaway and Spc-ncer prominent. Mitchell repulsed, but Wales placed cut to Parie on the right. The winger made ground and slipped the hall through to JlcLachlan. who put Lyttelton one up with a cross >hot. From the centre kick l.ytte'.ton came again, and Grecnawa.v sent in ji hot shot which Perry turned out for a rorr.er which was abortive. Rangers then took n hand. Howarth sent Rumins away on the left. Norman snapped up a transfer a.ad placed to Gibson, who levelled tin scores. Morley repulsed a Lyttelton counter-attack, and Bisselt placed well down 011 the right. Barwell raced through end crossed to Gibson, who gave Rangers flulead with a sharp drive from close in. Parle and Nptncvr were prominent, fo'- Lyttelton in the following play, and Mitchell conceded a corner which Parle placed behind. Play swung to the other end. where a weak clearance bv Mayo nearly let Norman through. An attack by "Lyttelton gave Spencer possession, and he tested Perry v ith a hoi drive. Taylor and O'Brien were then prominent in defence for Lyttelton, but Rangers came ag:iin. Barwell drove in furiously from the" right but Wilson snapped lip and cleared. Immediately afterward Norman let Gibson through, but the Ranger's centre shot wide, with only-Wilson fo beat. A Lyttelton laid was blocked, by Morley, and Aspinall sent Bniwpll away.j The winger centred perfectly, and Gibson tfjiieed through and registered from close in. After the, interval Lyttelton attacked strongiy through Greenaway and Spencer. MitV.ieU cleared to half-way, where Gordon sent on to Rumins. The winger centred, hut Gibson shot wide from a handy position. M"orlcy intercepted a combined movement on the Lytteitcvn right, with Parle nnci McLachlan 'prominent. Barwell raced away and finished with a good shot which Wilson gathered in fine style. At the other end Parle shot weakly when well placed, and McGilp followed with a drive which ,iust missed. Then Barwell broke away for Rangers, and from his centre Gibson drove the ball through. In the following play Lyttelton raided desperately to, reduce (he lead, but Mitchell, Perry, and Morley defended brilliantly for Rangers. Barwell and Gibson narrowly missed scoring for Rangers, and then McGilp put Lyttelton attacking. Spencer snapped up and sent in a long shot which beat Perry all the way. Frcm the kick Rangers returned to the attack. Norman crossed to Bissett, who netted from close in. A Lyttelion iaid was blocked by Howarth, and" a fast-moving ball was gathered by Barwell. The winger swung over for Gibson to raco through and register from close in. i;ho final score was: Rangers fi, Lyttelton 2. Referee, Mr W. 11. Perryman. Nomads (2) v. Western (0).
Plaving at Linwoocl Park, Western kicked oft against Nomads. John McDoupll -repulsed the initial Western onslaught, and James McDougall swung tlv! ball out to the left. Chapman beat Sprosten and centred for James McDougall to open tl>e scores with a close in shot. • Frickleton and Hoy made ground for Western, but Flood was safe. Then Purves and C. McDougall, combining nicely, carried play to' thor. other end. A centre looked dangerous, b\it Chappie nipped in and cleared smartly. AVhittington and Roberts were prominent in defence for Western, but the forwards lacked cohesion and much good w r ork 'by the half-backs was nullified on that account. Smart play by Muscroft put Nomads attacking. Smyth sent on to Chapman, who centred, but Sprosten was handy and he drove the ball clear. Again Chapman broke through from a pass by
Jluscroft. James McDougall gathered tho r-ross. but failed to shoot on tho instant, and Chappie cleared. Western now took a hand with Hoy and Frickleton prominent. Xorrie accepted on the right and sent in a good shot which Jackson parried cleverly. Western kept up the pressure with Whittington doing jeoman work. Norrie made ground and put a shot in the target, but Jackson, in goal for Nomads was safe. Each side was then prominent in defence, and half-time was called with the score: Nomads 1. Western 0. Fast exchanges opened the second half, and both sides showed nice combination. Thompson made ground for Western. with Clements in support. A cross to the centre was intercepted bv Graham, and from the clearance John McDougall sent out to Pnrves. The wingo- rr.-ule grom d ami centred, but Roberts trapped the ball and cleared for Western. Hoy headed a raid to the other end. and Norrie accepted in the right. A centre was well placed, but Flood boat Hoy for possession and cleared. From halfway Nomads broke awav in line. James SlcDougall gathered a cross and he put Nomads two goals up with a hard drive. Western attacked desperately in the final stages of the game, but the Nomads' defence held and time was called with the score: Nomads 2, Western 0. Referee, Mr \\. Mitchell.
Sunnyside (5) v. Thistle (2). In their match with Thistle, at the Mental Hospital ground, Jackson. Simpson, and Mizen were net available. Their places were filed by Prjston. Batten. and Robson. Thistle kicked of and attacked down the centre. Batter, relieved and Sunr.yside set up a hot attack which produced three corners In quick succession. These were cleared, but Sunnyside cumo again and Trotter opened the score with a fast shot from close in. Play continued in the Scots territory for a period. Falconer being tested by shots from Purdie and Browning Fine defensive play by Aitken and Flaherty kept Sunnyside nt bay, and then Walker whipped tho ball down the centre. Cloodull placed to Thomas, who sent out to the left. Patterson gathered and he levelled the scores with a great shot from well out. I:i the following play Thomas narrowly missed scoring for Thistle. Then Thompson put Sunnyside attacking. Purdie placed well forward for Trotter to race through and give Sunnyside the lend. Almost immediately Sunnyside came again r.nd from a pass by Robson Sutherland netted. The half-time sccre was: Sunnyeide 3, Thistle 1. Thistle were first dangerous on resuming, and from a pass by Goodall Ellis narrow,!y missed. Play swung to the other end. where Flaherty and Walker were prominent in defence for Thistle. W. Dick made ground for the Scots, and he finished with n good shot which Cnllaghan gathered. From halfway Thompson placed to Mctmclilan, who made ground and centred. Trotter raced through and scored from close in. End to end play followed until W. Dick bvoke away for Thistle. Crillaghan failed to hold a cross shot, and Patterson closing on goal, placed to Ellis, who scored. From the centre kick Sunnyside broke right through and from a scramble Trotter again scored. Flaherty, the Scots left back, was injured in the following play, and had to retire, Time was called with play in midfield :>nd the score: Sunnyside 5, Thistle 2. Referee, itr Robinson.
Technical Old Boys (2) v. St. Albans (2). Playing at Ecsor's road. Technical Old Boys "won the toss and elected to play with the sun at their bscks. St. Albans were first dangerous, but solid defensive play By the Technical full-backs kept them out. From a clearance by Cawthoray, Technical broke away, but the Saints' backs, Bunt and Bryan, played safe. Two corners in quick succession to Technical were cleared. From a St. Albans attack the Green forwards broke away and, following clever play, O'Loughlan sent in a long shot which struck the upright and was cleared in the nick of time. At the other end Muirson cleared a corner kick to St. Albans, and followed through with a fine solo run. Bridgens gathered a transfer, and lie beat Cullen with a fast rising shot. Technical continued to press, and a bombardment of the St. Albans goal found Cullen safe. Spiers broke away for St. Albans but Muirson cleared. Play swung to the other end, and for a period St. Albans ivere subjected to severe pressure. Half-time waß called with the score: Technical Old Boys 1, St. Albans 0. On resuming St. Albans attacked strongly ,and a shot from Colville skimmed the crossbar. At the other end .Cullen turned out a shot from Smith for a corner which was abortive. In a further Technical bombardment Cullen distinguished himself in goal for St. Albans. The Blues retaliated - through Donaldson, but Muirson relieved and sent Bridgens away on the <ving. Tiechart accepted a centre and put in a hot shot which Bryan diverted through his own goal. With two goals down, St. Albans applied pressure. Leeves let Colvillo away, ai'd from a transfer Gascoyno drove for goal. Kirk parried the shot, but Gascoyne raced through and scored. Technical then took a hand and Cullen did well to gather shots from Mitchell and Brosnan. At tho other end a corner to St. Albans was abortive, but the Blues kept up the attack end Colvillo levelled the scores. Fast exchanges characterised the closing stages of the ga*ne, but the defence held, and. time w r as called with the score: Technical Old Boys 2, St. Albans 2. Referee, Mr Smythe. . . Kaiapoi (8) v. Addington Workshops (2). At St. Albans Park, Kaiapoi defeated Addington Workshops by 8 goals to 2. Mr Stout was referee.
Linwood (3) v. Villa (2). Playing at Spreydon Reserve, Linwood beat Villa by three goals to two. For the winners the scorers were Harbnt (2) and Chappie. Johnston registered both goo'.s for Villa. Referee, Mr T. Campbell. JUNIOR GRADE. Playing at North Park, Rangers beat St. Albans by 4 goals to nil. Referee, Mr Bennett. s THIRD GRADE. At Ensor's road, Technical Old Boys defeated Marists by 2 goals to 1. Referee, Mr Garnett. Playing at North Park St. Albans bent Linwood by 5 goals to nil. Referee, Mr Yates. FOURTH GRADE. At North Park, St. Albans defeated Lyttelton by 7 goals to 2. Referee, Mr Goldman." ' I ; , SIXTH GRADE. Western defeated Technical, at North Park, by 2 goals to nil. Referee, Mr E. Davey.
