The following table shows the position of the' various teams engaged in the senior
Christ church (8) v. Merivale (3). After a, lev minutes' play, Merivalo, with a. light uor'-easte# in their favour, took play to the. Christchurch twenty-five, where they were awarded a penalty, Hooper's kick falling short.,A good kick by Brown shifted piny to the other end of tho field, where a penalty kick at goal was missed by Btuwn. When hard pressed insido the twenty-five, McCabe passed out to Ford, who found tho lino well down. After an interchange cf lticks, McCabe kicked past the Christchurch full-back and raced after the ball. McGregor was too fast for liim, however, and kicked out of bounds. From a scrum ncaj half-way Hooper shot out smartly to Dorreen, who, however, was pulled down before pelting properly into his slride. Merivale a-ttackcd, but. a, good chance was spoiled by over-kicking, Chriateliurch being able to force. From a scrum near half-way Mulla.n set his backs in motion, and the ball being handled smartly by the chain of backs Brown, on the wing, scored !i fine try after beating the full-back rather badly. Brown converted his try. Merivale were doing their Inst t.o keep the game open, in which task thev were assisted by Christchurch, but |ho tackling they encountered was formidable, with a irsult that Merivale -were unable to make much headway. Scrimshaw distinguished himself by charging down field with tho ball at toe, but * marl: relieved Merivale. A penajty pot. at goal to Christchurch w.i 3 narrowly missed by Brown. Merivalo forwards fliargcd for the lino and a- ' score looked iipminent, but the ball ,w"s kicked into the arms of Young (Christchurch's full-back), who took a timely mark. A moment or two later Dorreen was pushed into touch when nearlv over. Scrimshaw, who was plaving .an invaluable game for his side, gained , a, lot of ground by kicking and following up. Merivale's forwards overran the ball when, in a- likely posUion to score, but. Hcoper nickorl Tip and attpixiptcd to not a goal, the ball being fielded by Young;, "who cleared nicely. Cbristclvurc.i tried passing, but tho ball went, to RobilIjard without e.nyona having cut in, ana the wingrtbreeqnarter found .himself blocked, piny being subsequently taken to the other end of the field. More passing by Christchurch saw the ball handed on to RnbilJiard, who made a strong run down the line, bein<» grassed a irard or two from the line. Merivale liad bard luck a few moments later, McGregor just forcing 111 time to prevent a try beinc scored beside the posts. Th© score at half-timo was Christchurch 5, Merivale nil. . Merivale forwards showed up on the. resumption 1 of ■ play, '.and it was ,no,t, la&g_ before ■ they -vyeie ..hammering at the line, Carnegie nearly "-forcing his way acr<JfiS. Christchurch relieved, but play 80011 returned to their territory. The Christchurch forwards worked " the ball . to beyond halfway, where their backs wore set in motion. Talbot , cut ill and passed infield, the ball being lost. An attempt to }>ot a goal-by Ford failed, Robilliard forcing. Merivalo were making repeated efforts to score, but tho defence was too good for them, although it must be admitted that tliey were' not having tlie best' oi' the luck. A passing rush bv Merivalo backs saw the ball knocked on by "Ford when a. try seemed'likely. The score I was only postponed, howevew, for within two minutes Olliver picked xi'J near the - lino and was over in a- flash, with a iuap of Christchurch players on top of him. Part-ridge missed with the kick. Talbot had an unsuccessful attempt- to kick a penalty goal. MeCa.be made two great runs down "the line and from a scrum following his second effort Christchurch got possession and a force down resulted. A splendid break away by. llie Merivale backs raised
the hopes fS their supporters, but- Forcl.. hu::g on a fraction of a second too Ion? and the. ball consequently iailed to reach- McCabe, to the great disappointment of. their followers. llcrivaie continued to attack strongly and once, r.fter Christchurch liad forced, Hooper nearly bored 1m way through, being pulled down close to the posts, A penalty kick to Mesivalo was tßken by Hooper, who was unable to lift the ball. Old Bovb attacked strongly at the outset, and penned their opponents in their ov.-n twenty-five, but a force-down resulted. G<_-cd forward p!ny by tho 'Varsity pack drove Old lioys to hail-way. but On 1 iev and I". Ciirletan broke through and the" students wore asain thrown on the defensive. From a- wnini Bro-die &et tha Maroons moving", but Boag cleverly intercepted. Mortlock came iro and finished the movement by -touching down between the posts. Nixon converted. The rallied, and rushed Old Bovs' line. but. a pass from Simmers went"astrav. A frco kick relieved the "Whites' position, and once again tho students' line wis threatened. Nixon attempted a goal from a penalty, but was unsuccessful. 'Varsitv, headed by Burrows, took up the offensive. A pretty passing rush between Calder, Barak, and Alalian looked as though it would end in a try, but the last-named was called baek for being offside. Play now became uninteresting. Just before half-time "Old Boys were awarded a free kick and Nixon kicked a fif.e goal. Oil resuming Old Boys attacked strongly, but failed to penetrate the defence, until tho C'nrleton brothers, in a clever pid'c of play, outwitted their opponents, S. Carleton scoring near tho corner flag. Nixon failed to convert from a difficult angle. Drae-der led the Maroons in a promising rush, but Dalkv forced. Again the students charged, and from a penalty in their opponents' twenty-five Thompson kicked a neat- goal. Tho Old Boys' backs combined well in the next movement. . Dalley sent Hay away, who side-stepped several of the opposing backs before transferring to S. Carleton. Hobdav came up in the nick of •time and took Carleton's pass, and finally crossed. The anglo proved too difficult for Nixon. Gradually tho Maroons were pressed back, and another combined effort on tho part of I the Old Boys' rearguard culminated in Skipworth Retting behind the posts unopposed. Nixon had no difficulty with the kick. 'Varsity mado numerous attempts to keep play | amongst, their backs, but their passing- was r ill-timed, and Old Boys took every advanage of their opponents'.-mistakes. ScranibI iing play near the students' twenty-five followed, until Dalley forced- an opening and let Hobday away to score. S. Carleton made a- good but unsuccessful attempt at goal. 'Varsity forwards persisted in their attacks, and twice Old Boys were compelled to force. Eventually Brodie secured the ball from the ruclc and scored a well-earned try for the students. Thompson failed to convert. Just before tho call of time Boag, supported by Mortlock, broke away, the latter scoring in a good position. Gray adde.d the major points, and tho game ended: Old Boys 27, 'Varsity G. Referee, Mr L. Cade.

Tlie North Canterbury men played surprisingly well, their big forwards holding their own with tho Linwood pack and continually breaking on to the visiting backs, -several of whom showed a dislike fcr tho heavy defence required, Dalies being an exception in this respect. The first spell after a, good even tussle ended with honours even. Young having .ecored for North Canterbury and Fraaer fcr Linwcod.
