Several of the sawmilling companies are stated to be installing up-to-date fire-fighting appliances at the mills. Borough Improvements. The demolition of the large iron store at the corner of Mackay and Tainui streets is proceeding. For many years this structure _has been an eyesore, and its removal will make available space for an up-to-date building at the busiest street intersection in Greymoufch. Mining Matters. It is anticipated in mining 'circles on the Coast that the findings of the Coal Commission will favour the exclusive use of New Zealand coals by the Railwav Department. Three unions" have cast a majority for the five days' week, and it is expected that the proposal will be carried bv a large majority of votes. Some of the miners declare that within three months the companies will introduce the innovation. ' Improved hut accommodation is to be provided for the mine employees at Blackball, the Department having requisitioned the company to make the alterations. The abolition of the back shift may result at Blackball from the development work now in hand, by which it is hoped to open up new places. The Millerton mine was idle three days last week. Hotel, Changes Hands. Mr H. .Hay, of Christchurch, lias purchased the lease of the Lakeside Hotel, Moana, from Mr A. Hill, and has taken possession. South Weatland Tramline. A conference will open at Ross tomorrow with reference to the future use of Messrs Stuart and tramway from Ross to Waitaha. Southern farmers are urging the Railway Department to allow ,the use of Govern-" ment rolling stock on the tramway for the purpose of transporting stock, materials, and stores, and meet tho objection of the Railway Department that the line is not safe for such traffic by the argument that it would not put such a strain on the line as the heavy timber waggons which it carries at present. B.S.A. A fair in aid of the'R.S.A. building fund at Hokitika realised about £6O. Successful competitions were held in elocution and dancing. Personal. Mr A. J. McCredie, District Railway Engineer, Christchurch, loft on his return to Canterbury on, Saturday. Mr Justice Alpers will arrive from Westport on Tuesday to . conduct the Supreme Court sittings. Mrs J. Lythgoe loft on Saturday for Timaru. At an Ingleside held by the Buller Caledonian Society, Chieftain Duncan, who is leaving Westport, was presented with a set of military brushes. ■ Mr E. M. Williams, acting borough engineer at Greymouth, is making a good recovery from his recent operation. Miss May Croy, who is to be married shortly to Mr Douglas McKnight, was entertained by her friends at St. Andrew's Manse, Westport. The Rev. A. Miller presided, and a most enjoyable time was spent. Mr J. Hudd left on Saturday for Christchurch. where he will take up an appointment in the Railway Department. The funeral of the late Mrs Moore, which took place at Reef ton, was very largely attended. The Rev. Father Herring conducted the services at the church and graveside. The death is announced of Mr Louis Kormann, an old resident of Kumara at the age of 84 years. Deceased was one of the early miners at Wesfbrook and Cai>e Terrace. Golf. In a men's "bogey match played at Omoto yesterday, the best scores were: "Wild 2 up, Kettle 3 down, Dennehy 3 down. In a ladies' match, the best cards returned were Miss Griffin all square, Mrs Kitchingham 1 down; Mrs McCarthy 4 down. . The best cards returned in . the B division were: Miss A. M.
