VISIT OF MASTER ACTOR.

; MOSCOVITCH ON THURSDAY. I , What is promised as one of the most extensive and expensive ventures in dramatic productions to tour New Zealand is the visit of the celebrated Russian-Jewish actor, Maurice Moscovitch,, and J* 0. Williamson's powerful supporting company, who are to present, for the first time in this city, the remarkably successful four-act drama, "The Outsider," with Maurice Moscovitch in the leading role, at the Theatre Royal, conimencing oil Thursday evening. It is t-tatcd that a dramatic company, so oquipped and so en- \ ironed, has not appeared in tho Dominion for many years. The (production will be presented in every detail—scenery, costumes, properties, and effects —as obtained in Melbourne and Sydney, where the piece ran for many months in the two cilifes. In his review of thp initial performance of "The Outsider" in Sydney recently, a leading critic Said "that few actors in recent years have i cached a Sydney audience as did Maurico Moscovitch in the opening performance of 'The Outsider' on Saturday evening. It is lack of acting that makes him such a great actor—naturalness is the keynote'of his virile personality. -Mr Moscovitch is so remarkably easy in his speech and manner that one might overlook the perfect pitch and enunciation of his beautifully resonant speaking voice, and tho way in which he makes his, points without -ever forcing them. Some voices have a peculiar carrying quality naturally, and the great Russian actor' 'places' his voice perfectly just at the back of the theatre, as easily and surely as he could stretch tiis hund and touch an objeqt beside him. An audience is apt to forget'when listening to such a consummate artist as Mr Muscovilch, the years of hard work and training that have gone to make that easy manner. 'The Outsider' is all highly dramatic, ar.d aroused the immense audience to the utmost enthusiasm; at the conclusion there was a storm of applause' that lasted for many minutes, that was a tribute to a actor. Throughout the four acts he proved himself a master cf versatility, and delighted with a myriad expressions of voice and gesture. As Lalage Sturdee, the cripple girl, Miss Jean Robertson has a splendid opportunity for delicate emotion, and she deals with it very finely. In addition to' her line acting, she uses her voice charmingly." This fine artist will be supported by an excellent company, all of whom were specially engaged in England "and Australia for the production. "The Outsider" will be staged for the first five nights of tho season. The second production on Wednesday and Thursday, July Ist and ?nd. will be ''The Merchant of Venice," when Christchurch will see Moscovitch in his marvtllous impersonation of Shylock, said to be the finest the world has ever seen. The final play will bo "The. Great Lover," in which Moscovitch will appear in his original role of" Jean Paurel, played by him for over two years in London.

Thß box plans for "Th'- Outsider" will ■open at The Bristol to-moirow morning, at 9 o'clock.
