NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. A well-attended meeting of the Ashley branch of the N.Z.E.I. was held 011 Saturday, Sir B. A. McKeown presiding. It was decided to vote £3 towards the establishment of an cation court at the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition, but to take no action in the remits from Grey regarding back t>ervice. The secretary's action in connexion with a letter from the North Cnnterbury branch was approved. 3lr H. A. Parkinson, ,of Wellington, general secretary of the N.Z.E.1., addressed the meeting on the platform of tli© Institute, stressing especially ho. 1. which states that every child should l>e given the best education within the capacity of the individual without any bar whatever, and No. 10, which says that no public question affecting tho advancement of society can be settled satisfactorily without consideration of the effect of that settlement upon the children of the nation. At the conclusion of the address he ivas heartily anplauded. , Mr S. Sullivan, who has been coach to the North Canterbury first grade football team for the last two years and who vis leaving Ran pi or a to take ehargre of the AHenton school. was_ entertained at a soc'al on Saturday night in the Temnlar Hall by the members of the loca.l football club. There was a large attendance. The president of the club, Mr C. W. Tavlor. and Messrs E. D. R. Smith, H. M. Chaupoll, and J. Rowland, spoke in appreciative terms of the creat interest Mr Sullivan had tfiken in the 'dub, and espressed recrret at lo«in«r his sT"i"6s. The president, on heh"lf of members, made a presentation to Mr Sullivan. Durincr the first part of the evening cards were played, the winner beinsr Mr E. Buckley. After simper a so~ta.l hoi'.r was spent, sorters being contributed bv Mr E. D. T?. Smith nnd recitations bv Mr C. R. 'Smith. Mr A. G. Hunnibell presided at the piano.

HANMER SPRINGS'. According to later reports the seriousness of the recent snowfall in the back country wa.s somewhat overstated previously. The sheep are moving about and getting some feed, and the snow is clearing slowly off sunny an<[ windswept faces. A good thaw would be welcome.

WEST EYRETON. A euoliro party and social was held in the hall on Friday evening, in aid of the Domain pavilion fund. The pr'i&es were won by Miss Kitty Addinell and Jlr Appleton. A large number ■enjoyed the dance held afterwards, the music for which was supplied by the West Eyreton Jazz Band (Messrs L. J. Muldren, Gordon Smith, and S. Jennings). A hockey match was played on Saturday afternoon on the Domain between the local girls and Itangiora High School. Rangiora had the better of the opening half and scored twice, per Miss Johnston. Had it notbeen for the brilliant goal-keeping of Mrs Sheat- the score would have been much larger. The second half was very evenly contested. The visitors scored per Miss 'Schluter and the home skipper hacLvery bad luck in riot doing likewise more than once. It was a fine spectacular game, and the superior training and combination o fthe school gave til em a well-deserved win. The visiting team was hospitably entertained to-lunch and tea by the local girls.

WAIKUKU. The Waikuku Ladies' ' Basketball Club members played a friendly basketball game with'the Waikuku School, team, th© latter winning by 18 points to 6. Mr O'Donohue re f creed tho game. Afternoon tea was handed round to the players. The ladies of tho Methodist Church, and friends, met in the Methodist Church vestry with the object of forming a Ladies' Guild. Mrs W. B. Cuming presided. A guild was formed and will meet the first Wednesday in every month. Mrs Morgan was elected president and Mrs Rout vice-president. Mrs J. Morriss was elected secretary and treasurer. Afternoon' tea was handed round.

BELFAST. Tho football section of tlie Belfast Sports Club held a very successful social on Saturday evening. The success was largely due to the efforts ot the secretary, -Mr W. T. Rogers, and also to tho fact that the team has been very successful so far thi.3 season. Its record shows matches ployed 8, won 8, points for 114, against 10, without having its lino crossed. Nothing succeeds like'- success, so the boys who started out at the beginning of the season with little or no supporters now have a largo following and the gathering on Saturday should give tnem encouragement. Cards wor_e provided for tho nondancers, Mrs Reid and Mr Itudkin winning the prizes. Mrs Smaill received tiro ladies' booby prize and Mr P. Maddams the gentlemen's. During the evening items were giiven bv Miss Woods and Mrs R. Hall, Mr T. Fuddle, and Mr C. Miles. Some ' limericks, given by Messrs A. Brown, . T. Rogers, E. Rurk;in and E. J. AVottoii, \vere very much enjovede.Mr Thomas was in charge of' the card room and Mrs Thomas supplied the music, whi'.e the duties of M.C. were carried out by ! Mr A. K Clarke.

BROADFIELDS. The' fortnightly euchre tournament and dance, in aid of the school funds, was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday. There was a large attendance. . The prizes were, won as follows: —Ladies : Mrs T. Trusk, 1; Mrs M. Gallagher, 2; gentlemen's: Mr J. Scholield, 1; Mr M. Ounneen, 2. The ladies' prizes were given by Mrs J. T. Gallagher and the gentlemen's first prize by Sir T. Trask. The music for the dance was supplied by Mr T. Trask, extras being played by Mrs W. Ryan and Mr J. T. Gallagher., Mr J. T. Gallagher was M.C.

SPENCERVILLE. Spencerville residents visited Ouruhia on Friday night to play a cuchro match with the local team. A very pleasant evening was spent, and the result was in Ouruhia's favour by 21 games. After supper had been served dancing was indulged in, the music being supplied by Mrs H. Dawber ajid Mr Lance Spencer. Mr B. R. Dunlop was M.C. The return match will be held in the Spencerville School next month. A social will be held in the Spencerville School to raise funds to purchase a gramophone.

SALTWATER CREEK. The fortnightly euchre tournament was a most successful affair. The prizes given by Mesdames Eder and G. Lang and Mr W. Powell, went to Mrs F. Powell and Mr T. Wilson, who tied with Mr Muffins and had to play off. Splendid music for : a jolly dance was played by Mrs McAnally, Misses Eder, V. Lang, and Mr B. Powell Mr Rav was M.C. A dainty supper was served by Mr Eder and Mesdames F. and G. Lang.

GLENTUNNEL.

The Glentuniiel Domain Board met last week. Present: Messrs J. R. Longstaff (chairman), S. Kirkham, W. W. Leeming, J. P. Reynolds, A. Smith and A.: M. Wilson. Before commencing the business, the chairman welcomed Mr Fleming, who had been recently gazetted a member of the Board. It was reported that 200 Pinns Laricio, 300 Oregon Pine, and 200 Cupressus Macrocarpa had been ordered tor planting this winter. It was reported that the payments for grazing fees were coming in very slowly, and so far very few had paid up, though the fees were due nearly three months ago. It was decided to take a record of all stock on the Domain and to impound all not paid for by a certain date. The matter of obtaining a suitable man to plant trees was left in the hands of Mr Leeming. A reduction was made in the charge for a short night dance. The resignation of Mr J. Longstaff, as member and chairman, was received. Mr Longstaff has just completed lo years as a member of the Board, and his resignation was accepted with regret. Mr "Wilson moved that a letter bo sent to Mr Longstaff, thanking him for his loyal services ton the Board and expressing regret at the necessity for his resignation. Mr W. W. Leeming and Mr A. "M. "Wilson were elected chairman and secretary, respectively, for the remainder of the term. -* The, bachelors of the district met last week, and it was decided to hold the annual ball on the second Friday in July. ,
