BAND OF HOPE UNION.
The monthly meeting of tho Canterbury Band of Hope Union was held on Thursday. Thero was a good attendance of delegates,/ over which Mr Leney presided. The New Brighton United Band Union was thanked for a donation of £2. An encouraging report was received: from the North Beach Band of (Hope, which has only had. two meetings," stating that 69 members had signed the pledge. The resignation of Mr Giinnell as a- trustee of the Union was accepted with regret v and several delegates referred to the good work .done by him during' his long connexion with the Union. Mr Blazey was appointed to fill the office vacated by Mr Gunnell. It was arranged that the annual competitions of the Union open in St. Paul's Schoolroom on October 18th. A discussion took place regarding lapsed societies, and it was left to the secretary to write tothftse and see what could be done. It was decided to ask the Rev. A. Stuart to act as selector and judge of the essay competition. A committee waa set up to go into the question of obtaining suitable material for recitations, dialogues, etc. A discussion took place on "the largo amount of drinking that is going on amongst our young people of to-day." • s
