RANGIORA. Tho quarterly summoned meeting of Court Lobnrn, No. 7759, A.0.F., was held on Thursday evening, Bro. M. Fahey, C.E., presiding over a good attendance of members. Officers for tho ensuing term were elected and installed as follows: C.R.. Bro. M. Fahey (reelected); S.C.E., Bro. J. Robb; S.W., Bro. A. Duff ell; J.W., Bro. W. P.

Fahey; 5.8., Bro. It. Manson; J. 8., Bro. 11. L. Clafidge. Tho approval of the Registrar was received to alter the name of the Court. 1o Court Pride of Rangiora. One candidate was proposed for membership.

Mr W. C. Prosser has been appointed librarian and caretaker of the Hall and reading room, in place of Mr C. A. Cunningham, who has resigned through ill-health.

At the conclusion of the weekly practice on Thursday night, the members of St. John's Anglican Church choir entertained Mrs YV. Hamilton, who is leaving for the West Coast, at a social evening. A very pleasant time was spent with dancing and musical items given bv Misses X. Bailey, B. Smith, and R. Horrell, Messrs J. C. Thompson and A. J. Woodward. After supper the vicar, the Rev. J. F. Feron, presented tho guest of the evening with a hand mirror, a necklace, and a piece of Doulton ware, in recognition of her services as a choir member. Mrs Hamilton was also asked to accept, on behalf of her husband, a handsomely-bound Prayerbook from the Vestry, of which ho liad been a member for about 19 years.

ROTHERAM. The Literary and Debating Society lield its fortnightly meeting iu the hall. There was a full attendance of members, which was augmented by several supiwrters and visitors. Mr C. Moor occupied the chair. The subject under discussion ivas "'Which Is the More j Proateblo to the Country, the Horse 01 I the Motor?" After many excellent | speeches ha<l boon delivered by both i parties, a voto was taken which resulted in a win for the car by a very close margin. Tho subject, "Married Life v. Single Life," was decided upon as a subject for the next debate. Mrs C. T. Moor being chosen to uphold tho married, and Mr W. Hampton, jun., the dingle. On "Wednesday afternoon tho postponed opening of the Amuri Golf Club was held. There was n- good attendance, including many visitors. Mr M. Bethcll, the president, alter making a short speech, drovo the first ball, officially opening tho links. A driving competition was held for trophios given by Mr and Mrs Bothell, and resulted in Mrs O. T. Moor winning tho ladies' competition and H. W. D. Rogers the men's. Afternoon tea was provided by lady members of the committee and other lady enthusiasts. At a meeting held after the opening Mrs C Moor was appointed ladies' captain and Mr H. W. I>. Rogers men's captain.

CHEVIOT. At the annual meeting of parishioners of St. John's Church, the Rev. (J. ! Widdup presided over a good attendI ance. Tho vicar explained that owing to tho change of ministers tho meetingwas being held later than usual, and that as ho had only recently taken rip his duties in tho parish, ho could not present a report. He expressed his thanks to those who had canned on the services until his arrival, and asked for tho hearty co-operation of the par- \ ishioners in his work in tho parish. Bailey; Auditor, Mr F. R. Berg; Treasurer, Mr J. Bosomworth; Hon. Secretary, Mr T. West. Voles of thanks were passed to all who had assisted tho work of tho church. Tho question of re-establishing the Sunday School and the formation of a Ladles' Guild was left in the hands of tho vicar. At the conclusion of the business meeting, a social hour was spent, musical items being given by tho Rev. G. Widdup, Mrs Widdup, Mrs F. Berg, Miss McDonald, Mrs Noonan and Miss V. Bosomworth. Supper was provided by tho ladies. In St. John's Church, Cheviot, tho Rev. G. Widdup was formally inducted as vicar of tiie parochial district of Cheviot. Tho Rev. O. F. Saunders, of Kaikoura, was tho officiating minister, and tho special form of service was used, while hymns suitable to tho occasion were sung. Tho Rev. C.'F. Saunders delivered a very line and interesting address.

LEITHFIELD. The annual meeting of the Loithfield Public Library was held on Thursday evening, when thero was a larger attendance of subscribers that has been the case of recent years. Mr F. Ashbv, who presided, read a statement of the receipts and expenditure for the year, showing a credit balance of £23 16s Bd. On the motion of Mr A. Boyce a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the chairman, 3lr F. Ashes, and tho honorary librarian, 3lr G. White, for their help during the year. It was de cided to spend £lO on new books. It was further decided that a card match be held in aid of tho funds. The following officers were elected: —Chairman, 3lr F. Ashby; honorary librarian, 3lr G. White; committee, tho five trustees (Alessrs A. Bovce, F. Ashby, H. 3lav, J. S. Russell, C. Kirkbv) and 3lrs G. Parsons and Alisses A. Mandor and A. C. Lloyd. The weather this week has been a pleasing contrast to that of last week. Since Alonday the days have been fine, following on tho hard frosts experienced on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. There was no frost yester'lay, the weather being very mild for this time of tho year.

BELFAST. Thero was a small attendance of members at the last meeting of Court Star of Belfast, A.O.F. Bro. G. Brown, P.C.R., presided. Two brethren were- reported on the sick list. Votes of thanks were passed to P.D.C.R. Bro. E. Budkin, for his report of a meeting of Court Queen of the Isles, which lie attended as v. district officer-in conmany with P.C.R. Bro. D. C. ait-Arthur, and to Bro. J. Hey for a lenort of a meeting of the United Friendly Societies Dispensary. Complimentary tickets to attend the annual social of Papanui Oddfellows were received and left to the C.R. to allot. The holding of a ladies' evening was left over until next meeting. The matter of appointing visitors to the- Christchurch Hospital was again brought forward, and the secretary was instructed to apply for the necessary tickets. One nomination for membership was received and approved. The nomination of officers for the nest term resulted as follows: —C.R., Bro. A. E. Clarke; S.C R., Bro. D. Miller; S.W., Bro. P. SEFTON. In connexion with the Kowai Rabbit Destruction Board, a hare drive was held yesterday, starting from Sefton Domain. Tho party consisted of 40 guns, and proceeded north, lunching at the Mount Grey homestead through the kindness of M~r and Mrs J. Fleming, returning through Balcairn. The total bag for tho day was 102. It was arranged to hold another drive between tho railway and the coast the week after next.

"Under tho auspices of the Sefton branch of tho W.C.T.C, a. meeting was held at Mr George Cake's on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Henderson of Chris tchurch. addressed the gathering, and items were contributed bv Mrs W. G. P. Ingley and Miss 1. Hainiug. A general meet ins; of the Sefton Cricket Club was held at Mr F. A. Ford's residence, the president. Mr George Clarke, presiding. The balancesheet of tho presentation social last week was presented and considered very satisfactory in view of the inclement weather. It was decided to hnvo a photograph of the team taken during the week-end. The socretmy was asked to send a letter of sympathy to. Mr (i. S. .Smith in the severe illness of his wife.

OXFORD. Tho Oxford W.C.T.F. met in tho Coronation Hall on "Wednesday afternoon. The president said they were gathered to celebrate ""White Ribbon" Day. They had hoped to have an address from Mrs Peryman, the editor of the newspaper, but unfortunately illhealth prevented her from visiting Oxford at* present. An article was read describing tho growth and extension of of the "White Ribbon'' sin-co it was first published in 1805. Correspondence was read concerning the Bible-read ing-in-Schools Bill, brought forward by Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P. A resolution in favour of tho Bill was carried, and it was decided to write to the member for the district urging hm. to support the Bill. Miss Gainsford reported that a drawing room meeting liad l>een held during the month at the residence of Mrs L. Watson. It was decided to hold a meeting at View Hill. Two new members were initiated, and a collection was taken up in aid of the Maori work.

An afternoon tea was held in aid of the funds of tho W.C.T.U. on Thursday, and proved most successful, thanks "to the generous gifts and willing helo given by members and friends of the Union,

HORORATA. Mr R. W. Oliver presided over a meeting of the benedicts of the distri'ct, when a fair number wore present. It was docided to hold the annual ball next month, and to procure tho services of tho Glenata Orchestra. The following committed was elected to make complete, arrangements: Messrs R. W. Oliver (chairman), L. Mooar, G. Timmings, W. Page, W» Kellaway, W. H. Bailey, socrctary, Mr A. J. Harris. It was decided that the ladies' committee consist of the wives of tho committee Supper and decoration arrangements were left in tho hands of tho ladies' committee.

A meeting of the committee of ffic Tenuis Club was held in the Domain on. Thursday, the Rev. H. N. Roberts presiding. Owing to the bad state of repair of the courts,'it was decided to obtain prices for tho relaying at loast of ono of them. A recommendation was forwarded to tho annual meeting that provision be made in the rules of tho Snowdon Cup competition for the presentation of a miniature cup to the winner and .a trophy to tho runner-up. It was decided to present one for this year to E. Sime, winner of the competition. Tho secretary reported that E. Reece and Co., Ltd., had given a tropin for Miss E. Thorny the runnerup. Tho Rev. Roberts presided over a meeting'Of the vestry at which Messrs E. J. Jekyll, R. Oliver, B. Alaffey, H. Prestidge, R. Pickering, and W. S. Pratt were present. The secretary reported upon tho negotiations concerning tho repairs to the vicarage. It was decided to forward to the Cmirf-h Property Trustees the information "required. Tho matter of lighting the church from tho vicarago meter was deferred until quotations wcro received for tho cost of installation. Mr W.' S. Pratt resigned from the churchwardenship owing to his appointment to a position on tlie West Coast. Mr B. J. Jekyll was appointed churchwarden in his stead. A very successful progressive euchre tournament was heW in the Hall on Thursday night in aid of t"io local Plunket Society's funds. A record number of players sat down to ihe tibles. The prize-winners were: — Ladies: Mrs G. C. Derrett, 1; Miss Tui O. Eldridge, 2; Mrs Timmings 3, Mrs W. Kellawav 4. Men: Messrs McKenzic 1, L. Mooar 2, J. Keltie 3, G. Symoris 4. It has been derided to hold a series of tournaments for the same purpose through tho winter.

LEESTON. A meeting of the Ellcsmere Technical Association at Leoston this week was presided over by 3lr T. A. Stephens. Sympathy was expressed, with Air A. Tong, who was unablo to be present on account of illness. The annual balance-sheet was presented, showing a credit balance of £36. Tho secretary reported that 63 ladies were attending dressmaking classes iu Leeston, Dc-ylc-stou, Lakesulo and Southbridge. A report on tho classes from the Education Department's inspector drew attention to the excellent work done by the woodwork class at Southbridge, but tho secretary stated that in spite of thisi the class was several short df the number required by the Department, it being necessary to hare 10 pupils in addition to schoolboys who took the classes in the evening. The inspector's report of the dressmaking classes was also complimentary. The bookkeeping class at Leeston was being instructed on very sound lines. A balance of £lO lis from tho Southbridge competitions had been halved by the Southbridge woodwork class and the public school piano fund. Tho secretary was instructed to write to the Ellesmere Branch of the Farmers' Union asking that a representative should bo appointed to act on the Technical Association.

The travelling farm school under the direction of the Department of Agriculture, which is visiting country districts this month, will hold a twodays' session at Lecston on Wednesday aifd Thursday. The lecturers include Messrs A. H. Cockavne (director), J. Kerrigan. A. TV. Hudson. H. E. B. Watson, J. G. Cook, K. Gorringe and F. E. Ward (district organiser). Lectures will be given at the A. and P. Association's room, and practical demonstrations at the farms of Messrs TV. 0. Rennie and TV. Johnston.

' The la3t weekly meeting of the Leeston Wesley Guild took the form of a literary evening, at which Miss K. Ferrier presented a study on the life and works of J. M. Barrie, novelist

and playwright. One of Barrio's plays, "A New AVorld," was staged, .the actors being Mrs A. Brown, Miss H. Barnett and Messrs G. Rydo and J. Smith. Supper was served at tho close of the meoting.

ROLLESTON. At tho fortnightlv d&nce in aid of the Memorial Hall Fund, there was a very good attendance. The music was supplied by Mr H. Ferry (Lincoln) and extras were contributed Ivy Mr .. Wall. Messrs V. Finnegan and S. Crawford acted as M.C.'s. Amongst thoso present were Mesdames Crawford, Finnegan, S. Payne, Gallagher, Misses G. Annett, V. Jeffs, M. Fahey, B. Carpenter, E. Carpenter, G. LITTLE RIVER. Br. H. Greenwood, one time- resident ' in Little River, has heoro appointed medical officer and resident Magistrate at Chatham Islands. Dr. Greenwood held a commission as captain in the 4 Royal Army Medical Corps during the great war, and saw' a great deal of active sen-ice.

The funeral of the late Mr Harry Lee took place on Thursday afternoon, leaving his residence, Puaha, for tho Little River Ceraeterv.. The ni&n v beautiful wreaths received spoke quently of Hie esteem, m which the deceased was held. Wreaths were sent bv Mr J. Topp and family, Mr and Mrs M. Barclay, the relatives, Mr and Mrs J. A very pleasant evening was spent in progressive euchre and competitions, the euchre prizes being won ny Mr and Mrs Simpson, whilst Airs Bailey and Air Alerry won the ccpipetitious. Air Bailey, in a happy litth' speech, wished Air and Airs Alerry all happiness and prosperity. Those present included Atr and Air? P. V. Bailey, Air and Airs W. Wright. Air and Airs E. S. SOUTHBRIDGE. Under the auspices of the Southbridge Branch of the Red Oosh and Order of St. John Amalgamated teociety, a social was held in the Presbyterian Hall, at which certificates recently won by the pupils of the First Aid and Home Nursing Classes were presented by Dr. TV. A. Jqhnston. The evening was pleasantly spent in games and music. The following certificates -were awarded: Homo nursing, Mesdames Bishop and Stringer and Miss Greenall •first aid, Mrs Bishop Miss D. Cowan, Miss C. Cowan. Messrs TV. Eggleton, L. Hickman. H. Rcwe, E, Chapman, H. Chapman, L. Maw, and J. Williamson.
