TRADE UNION SLUMP.

EFFECT OF UNEMPLOYMENT. (by cable— peesb association—copyright.) (australian and n.z. cable association.) LONDON, Juno 17. The annual report of tho General Federation of ITrado Unions shows that the membership has fallen by 89,734 to 830,000, tho lowest recorded since 1912, wbilo receipts, £57,730, have declined by £3221 compared with the previous year.

The secretary, Mr W. A. .Appleton,' attributes tho I'osses of membership chiefly to amalgamations, and loss of lnenibersship in unions themselves ; also tho poverty of tho unions owing to unemployment reducing contributions. Mr Appleton expresses tho opinion that tho return to tho gold standard may help to solve tho problems of Irado and unemployment. Ho urges a reduction in rates and taxes as another step in tho samo direction.
