NORTH CANTERBURY.
I ROTHERHAM. [ A meeting of delegates from ladies' [ hockey clubs between the Clarence River in the north, and the Waipara in | the south, was held in the ball on Tuesday afternoon. There were present Miss Savage and Mr Truman (Cheviot), Mr Ginnane (Hapuku), Messrs Creed and Crampton (Waiau), Miss Cameron (Waikari), Mesdames Parker, Moor, and Miss Genet (Rotherham). Mis Moor was voted to tho chair. It was decided to form a sub-association to be called the Hurunui Ladies' Hockey Sub-Association, to play for a shield, .jriven by Mr and Mrs T. C. Robinson. The meeting passed a hearty vote of thanks to the donors of the shield. It was decided to make Rotherham a centre for holding Association meetings. Officers were elected as follows : Patroness, Mrs G. W. Forbes; president, Mrs T. C. Robinson; vice-presi-dents, Mrs G. White (Waiau), Mrs H. Dampier-Crossley (Rotherham), MessrsAlan Howard (Hapuku), A. D. Anderson (Cheviot), and H. Saundercock (Waikari): secretary and treasurer, Miss J. Thomson. Rules, as drawn up for the Association, were agreed to, subject to the approval of Mrs T. C. Robinson. A permit committee, consisting of Mrs T. C. Robinson, Mrs G. W : hite„ and Mrs Saundercock, was appointed. The meeting decided that Saturday should be match day, and that "the comnetjtion, open on June 27th. The following 'is the draw for the opening day:—Cheviot nlays Hapuku at Hapuku: Waikari plays Waiau at Waiau; Rotherham a bye. BALCAIRN. A verv laree number of people from the surrounding districts were present at the fortnightly euchre and dance, held in the schoolroom on Wednesday night, in aid of the school funds. The prize-winners were:—Ladies, Miss EPark: gentlemen. Mr F. Penfold: consolation prizes, Mrs Cooper and Mr W. Ditford. The prizes were given bv Mr J. Fitzpatrick. Tho floor was cleared for dancing, which was continued to an early hour,.to music supplied bv Mrs Sangster, Mr Sangster, Mrs wid Masters Habgoods (2), Misses G. Hibbard, G. May, A. Fitzpatrick and E. Carroll. Mr Dermott made an efficient M.C. SEFTON. A combined meeting of the Sefton, Ashley, and Loburn Anglican Churches was held at Ashley on Wednesday evening. The curate, the Rev. H. F. Ault, presided over a good attendance. The reciepts for the car fund totalled over £9l. and after paying for the car, there will lie a credit balance of between £3 and £4. A vote of thanks was passed to all who had assisted with gifts. CUST.
• A meeting of residents of Cust and district was held in tho card-room of tho club on Thursday evening, to consider the desirability of moving to. have a Post Office erected m tho town-, ship. Mr H. Tallott (chairman of the Rangiora County Council) was voted to tho chair. The meeting was attended and enthusiastic. The chairman outlined the reasons why he thought the time had conic to have a Post Office separate from the station: (a) The present .arrangement did not give tho most satisfactory service; (b) A separate Post Office would mean a large increase in business, (c) The size of the telephone bureau .(just uuder 10!) subscribers). A. township of the importance of Cust was entitled to a Post Office. After some discussion, it was decided to form a deputation and present a petition, as extensively signed as possible in the short time, to the Hon. Sir James Parr to-morrow. The Hon. D. Buddo agreed to arrange for an. interview with the Minister to-mor-row afternoon, and introduce the Reputation. The following were appointed to wait on Sir Jaines Parr: Messrs H. Tallott (leader), A. A. Ryde, E. W. Cooper, R. Gardiner, S. Wood, G. K. Crysell, J. Forbes, A. Tull, CF. Cowens, J. Cook, E. C. Ducat, T. B. Lock, and Rev. A. H. Acheson. Mr Tallott was asked to arrange for some representatives from West Eyreton to be present also. Mr J. McKenzie was appointed to the deputation, and.asked to draft the petition and have it typed. Some, discussion took place regarding the best sfiie for the- proposed post office, and eventually Messrs F. ■H. Early, S. Wood, T. B. Lock and A. Tull, with the chairman, were appointed to go into the matter and obtain information regarding the size of various sections mentioned 'and the probable cost. The district was then divided up and various members present undertook to canvass, a section for signatures to the petition." The following will represent Cust seniors at Lobum to-morrow afternoon: Campbell, Gartry, Harman, Sail, Gartry, Leggett, Kennedy,. Peachey, Hack,' Watkins, Forbes, Stevenson, Burgess, Cowens, McDonald, Wayland. TAI TAPU. At the second of the. series of progressive euchr© evenings held by the Tai Tapu Tennis Club in aid of its funds, the prizes presented by Messrs Stroud and Plumndge were won as follows: — Ladies', Mrs Brake Ist and Mrs J. Nimmo 2nd; gentlemen, Mr J. Nimnio Ist, and Mr F. Wallace 2nd. The winners on Tuesday evening were:— Mr Reg Tobeck and Mrs Plumridge. The district will' shortly lose two of its popular residents, Messrs J. Cossar and J. Cochran. Although neither of these gentlemen took a very prominent part in public affairs, they are ■ both known throughout the district for thenhospitality and generosity, and they will be greatly missed. A pleasant time was spent at the Parsonage, when the members of the Guild entertained Mrs J. Page, who has made her home in the Lincoln district. The Rev. T. J. Wallis presided over'a large attendance. On behalf of the members, he expressed regret at losing Mrs Page and her family from the Tai Tapu district, and conveyed to her best wishes for success and happiness in her new home. Mrs J. Gilmour then presented Mrs Page with a work basket and two glass dishes. Mrs Page suitably responded. Miss L. Pago contributed "a solo. Afternoon tea was handed round. Mr Wallis gave a most interesting address on "Women in Relation to Mission' Field Work." Miss May Barnett. daughter of Mr and Mrs M'athew Barnett, has just returned tS her home on furlough from the Solomon Islands, where she has spent several vears as a missionary. Miss Harriet Barnes, of St. Martins, is spending a holiday in Tai Tapu with friends. Mrs Bruce Norton is the .guest of Mrs Heinzmann. The weather has been very bleak and whitrv, and the ground has received a thorough soaking. Some of the potato crops are suffering on account of the continuous wet weather. TAKAMATUA. The residents of Takamatua are 1 holding fortnightly euchre tournaments in the school-room, which are proving a verv great success. ■'Mrs M. Shepherd is spending aholidav with her mother in Christehurch. Miss E. W. Hammond left yesterday to sptnd a holiday with relatives in Christchurch. Miss Lennon, of Ashburton, is staying with Mr and Mrs P. Lennon.
HORNBY-ISLINGTON. The Hornby Dance Assembly held its weekly dance in the Orange Hall on Wednesday. The music was supplied by Smith's Marimba Band, and Mr L. Clarke was M.C. Among those present were:—Mrs Davis, Mrs Baker, Misses Thelma Lake (Riccarton), Dulcie Muir (Sockburn), Una Worts, Lily Freeman, Jean Simpson, Doris Standeven, Tira Standeven, Myra Cooke, Sophie Boyle, Annie McGarry, Luev Garrett, Doris Griffiths, Rose Eogaski, Messrs C. Flaws (Sockburn), D. Irvine (Riccarton), B Seville (Riccarton), C. Goodman (Prcbbleton), A. Cullen (Riccarton), 11. Wright (Sockburn), F. Whitelaw, R. Woodham, W. Woodgate, S. Minards, N. McDonald (Christchurch), M. Bridges, A. Scott, P. Tippett, C. Woods (Sockburn), L. Clarke (Christchurch), J. Price (Templcton), R. Barnett, P. Middleton, and R. Henderson. A , v , ery en .l°yable musical evening was held at Mr and Mrs J. W. BairTbridge's, Hornby, on Wednesday. Musical items were given by Mr and Mrs Chas. La\vrence, Mrs R. Lodge, and Mr J. Bambndge. Recently a party of about fifty paid a surprise visit to, the residence of Mr and Mrs Janies McGrath, who, after having resided in the Fernside district for 20 years, have, sold their farm and are going to Sefton, where they have acquired another property. ■t^ T - P leasant evening, interspersed with songs, recitations, cards, dancing and gramophone selections passed too muckly. After partaking of supper, Mr TV. brnith, on behalf of neighbours and friends, asked Mrs McGrath to accept a silver teapot and hot water jug and Mr McGrath, a case of Locwe pipes. Mr Smith spoko of the kindness shown by them to all neighbours and friends. Mr McGrath suitably responded. LADBROOKS. The second of a series of euchre tournaments and dances was held in the Town Hall. The prizes were won by Mrs H. Pickering, senr., and Mr H. Watson. The music for the dance was supplied by Mr F. Meyerhoff. Mr G. Birss was M.C. At, a meeting of the Town Hall Committee it was decided to hold a grand fancy dress and masquerade ball, in aid of the hall funds, at an early date. AKAROA. The Akaroa Boating Club ran a successful bazaar on Tuesday afternoon in the Anglican Parish Room. A band of willing workers attending the various stalls did good business, while the various "sidelines" raked in the nimble sixpences and shillings to good purpose. The proceeds, agratifyingly ' substantial amount, are to be devotod to tho reduction of the mortgage on tho boat-house and to assisting the club's funds generally. In the evening progressive' euchre and dancing in the Social Hall at the boatsheds were the means of providing still another acceptable addition to the funds. Following the stormy week-end, bright, sunny days have blessed the Peninsula with, as far as Akaroa is concerned, two of the stiffest frosts the sheltered little town has known for many a long day.
