At the invitation of the Union Company Wellington Press representatives wade a j visit to the, Mararoa on Tuesday for the purpose of seeing for themselves whether ] there was any truth in tho statement made ] at tho Dunodin Chamber of Commerce to the- effect that tho vessel was dirty and smelly. The "2\tw Zealand Times'" report of the visit states that tho complaint was found to lie without foundation. It was noticed that the vessel was epick and span, also that the lavatory accommodation was tho usual class which is found on oil passenger steamers, and was in first-class order. With legard to the bathrooms often being awaah, it was observed that they are fitted with tho usnal scuppers to take away any overflow. In addition, it was ascertained that a steward is alwayß on duty at the bathrooms to eco that they are kopt clean. The stewards on tho Wellington-Lyttclton forty service, it was «tated, haro, in most cases, been on the ships for years, and are noted for their cleanliness. Tho report in the "Dominion" states that its reporter found the bathrooms and lavatory accommodation scrupulously clean, and, in fact, all parts of the vessel exhibited markod cleanliness, both in the saloon and steoiago quarter*. The chief steward stated that a bathroom etoward was constantly employed to mop -up any wet after each passenger had used the bathroom, and a, continuous watch was maintained to keep tho lavatories clean. It would be possible for a passenger to enter a bathroom immediately after another, before the steward could mop up any water. On a rough voya«e sickness among the passengers might account for temporary uncleanhness in any part of tha vessel, but no complaints of such had reached the chief steward.
