Democratising the University. Wo reprint to-day from "National "Education" that very interesting journal's opinion of the place and purpose of a University. It has usually been supposed that tho chief purpose of a University is to supply the educational needs of that comparatively small section of the population -who prepare themselves for more advanced studies than can be provided at school. We had thought, too, that the urge for higher education came as a rule from -within, and in any case had its claim to satisfaction ■within. But we have apparently been "trifling with facts." There is a mysterious "will of the community in "regard to higher education" of which we have been as ignorant as the "group of venerable reactionaries" who have so long been dominating the Senate.
