DRAINAGE BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Chrislchurch Drainage Board met last'night. Present: Messrs W. J. Walter (in the chair), A. T. Smith, S. C. Bingham, tT. W. Beanland, H. G. Livingstone, E. H. 'Hamilton, and W. E. Carey. Mr H. J. Otley was granted' three months' leavo of absence en account of ill-health. lieavo of absence for' the meeting was gianted Messrs H. Holland and D. Itowse. Tho Wo; - ks Committee reported that the engineer had been instructed, to prepare a report on the best method of improving the iVgaio street.drain. Xno Works Committee stated that instructions had , been given to \ tho engineer to take steps to remedy tho matters complained of regarding'tho silting of tho river Avon. Tho btafi" Uommitteo' reported having authorised tho engineer to 'call applications for an additional inspector at a salary of £'lls per annum. A deputation from the Rugby League asked the Board to cover tho drain running through Monica Park. Mr W. S. Moylo said it was proposed to beautify the' front area of tho Park, and beforo that could be done tho present open drain should bo covered over., At present tho open drain 'was unsightly, and was also dangerous to tho. public attending the Park. Mr E. C. McKeon said it was only requested that that portion of the open drain •within, tho fenced area should bo covered — a length of three and a-halfor four chains. A few weeks ago two men Blipped into- tho drain during tho exit rush from tho ground. Mr J. M. Coffey "was tho third member of tho deputation. , Tho chairman said that Monica Park was ono of tho finest sports grounds in Christchurch, but the drain could never bo closed —it: was a.-natural. watercourse. It might bo better for tho Works Committee of the 'Beard to meet tho members of tho deputation on tho ground. Tho Board, ho felt sure, would do what it could io help the deputation. . The Board tlccided to ask the Works Committee •to inspect tho ground and report. , Messrs Hanmer and Barker, on behalf of a client, applied for permission to run tho effluent from a largo septic.tank at St. M-artina, into the river Heathcoto. Tho effluent would be treated and diluted before dischargo into tho river. Mr J. W. Beanland said it should be stipulated thnt when the ■ sewcra wero extended the effluent should run into tho sewers. ~ ~ .. , . . The chairman said the St. Martins district should como into the sewer area. My W. R. Carey moved that the application bo granted subject to certain conditions. This was agreed to. _ _ . The Aranui Burgesses' Association asked the Board to deepen the drain at Bcxley. At urcsent the drain would not cany away tho *surfaco water from the surrounding padThe application was referred to the Works Committee to investigate aid report. Mr J W ' Pitncr, of Watford street, Papanui, applied to ha'vo a drain sunning through "lis property piped. Tho Board gave, tho applicant permission ic pipe the drain at his own expense, tho work to bo carried out to tho satisfaction of tho Board's engineer. _ t The chairman'said an adjoining owner had I piped his section of tho drain, and tnat was I the general practice. '
