Mr Kobson underwent an operation for appendicitis at the Grey IJivcr Hospital last week, and is making a good recovcrv.

Miss K.i Groom has been appointed to the vacancy on the telephone exchange staff caused by the transfer of Miss 0. Ealhbun. " . Mr U. Estou, of tiic Post Office staff, was presented by the United Football Club with a fountain-pen on the : 'eve of his departure for Wellington on transfer. Tho funeral of the late Mrs. W. P.. Lair was largely attended. The service at. the graveside was read by tho Bcv. T. X. Cuttle, who also conducted a memorial service at .St. John's Church.
The death occurred last evening at Hokitika of Mr James Charles Martin, a native of Oxford. Canterbury, a.t the age of 60 years. The deceased is survived bv three sisters.
Mr Peter Nelson, a Greymouth pioneer, died last evening at his residence in Pdaketown. at the age of !>0 years. Deceased was a native of Denmark, and leaves a family of four sons and one daughter. He had resided in this district for over half a. century, and was a well-known -boatman in the early days. Messrs "W. A. Jamieson and H. T. Parry (Hokitika) leave to-morrow for Palmerston North, where they will attend the Winter Show.
A Property Sale. At Iteefton on Saturday the Exchange Hotel and Princess Theatre were sold by auction for £1950. The competition was poor. ■
Tire. Through, the ignition of some material ■which came in contact with a candle carried by one of (he residence of Mr McCormuck, of Buller road, Reefton, was burned to the ground, nothing,being, .saved... Only, .. for- „tli'e good work of .the Fire Brigade, two other houses in the immediate vicinity would also have been destroyed..

Sunday there were 78 points of rain at Hokitika and 45' hours 46 minutes' sunshine. Golf. For" the monthly, medal competition' of the Hokitika Ladies' Golf Club, the best cards returned were as follows: Miss I. Lewis, 113—31—79; Miss Moore. 88—6—82; .Mrs F.
