SMITHFIELD MARKET.
The following letter has been received from the Meat Board's London manager in connexion with Smithfield Market reports : ■ For several x months 1 have been endeavouring to get the Superintendent of tho Smithfield Market to separato in his statistics New Zealand' from Australia. You will have noticed that, in the past, all the Smithfield reports grouped New Zealand and Australia together, in the daily pitchings and the monthly and yearly figures. I am pleased, however, to adviso as a rosult of my efforts, tho Superintendent of Smithfield has now separated New Zealand from Australia, as from April Ist, and the . statistics of pitchings are now more valuable from our point of view. ' ~«■.• During the first week after the alteration had. been mad*, it was found difficult to get the carters and stores to separate, and I do not think the proportions of New Zealand and. Australian • were quite correct in that week. Tho later returns, however, seem to bo now in order. '.,,'' The full value of this alteration will, no doubt, be felt in future years, when wo can get the comparison of the previous yeftr_ of the pitchings of New Zealand meat. This will give us -a -better idea of the general gonsumption 'of. Now Zealand 1 meat ; Deferring to rhv previous advice regarding the Smithfield Superintendent's weekly retail prices. I may Bay that the trade generally on Smithfield are very pleased aT the alteration which I was ablo .to arrange. In tins connexion I have recently received a letter written by a well-known firm handling New Zealand moat which was quite unsolicited, and which stated' that they Jiave , felt an immediate improvement in the demand "tor New Zealand lamb sinco New Zealand was shown separately in the weekly price list.
