TRAMWAY BOARD.
YESTERDAY'S MEETING. The Tramway Board met yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs jj.. Pearco (chairman), Geo. T. Booth, A. S. Taylor, E, W. White, John; Wood, W< J. ; Walter, D. Sykes, and J. A. Fleaher..
The chairman stated that during the past fortnight he had received not only at his private residence and his place of • business, but also at the Board's office, a jiumber of anonymous lotters. He had. ieciaed not to reply to any anonymous letters. • The- Works and Traffic Committee reported that negotiations were in progress between tho Government and tho .board respecting the new power contract. This already showed that the Board would bo, required to face an increase of about JB7OOO per annum in the near future. A petition was received asking that'the third sectjon on the IS'orth Beach line should bo extended from Buxton's loop to Kinloch street., As the present section is already the standard length, the committee could not accede to the- request. Tenders for supply of uniforms have been received, and a report thereon would be presented to next meeting of the Board. Tho report, was 'adopted!' Airs Massey wrote thanking the Board for its beautiful floral tribute in connexion with the death of tho Prime Minister. -.lt was decided to comply with the. request made by the St. Martins Residents' Association to stop all cars in front of the substation on Hills road, tho present stop being dangerous. The St,~ Albans' Burgesses' Association asked, that the'seat at the north side of Berwick street (Cranford street line) be removed, to the south side, and stated that the 'shopkeeper on' the south iiide was agreeable.
The General -Manager stated that tho removal of the seat, as requested, would cause delay. The shopkeeper referred to in the Association's letter said that he did not wish the "seat placed under his verandah. It was decided to reply, in view of the shopkeeper's statement, that the Board could not agreo to the change. - It was decided to accept the offer of A. D. Riley and Co. to.extend the fire alarm Fvstem to the Board's garage for £lls. The General Manager etated.that this would result In a reduction of fire insurance premiums of £ls per annum. - The Town Clerk, Christchurch, wrote that the City Council accepted dedication, as a fjmblic road, of land at tho corner of Barbadoes street, provided the area, is formed and asphalted to the satisfaction ■ of the City Engineer. The Papanui Burgesses' Association askei. that passengers from Papanui should be picked* up on the west side of the road between Papanui and Leinster road, to avoid the danger to women and children passengers arising from them leaving to cross the road, to board -trams.
The General Manager said fiat this would involve bars, gates,, and seats being altered, and. again altered at Leinster road which would cause inconvenience to passengers, in addition to taking extra time. It was decided to reply on the line 3 of this statement.
In -response to the request from the Sprey : don Burgesses' Association that representatives of the Board should address a meeting of. the Association, the chairman' and Mr Sykes were, appointed to dp eo. -Replying to a question by Mr Flesher, the General Manager stated that the clearance between cars on doubo track routes was.four feet and a half.
