' About 271b of tobacco was missing, and it was 'known ■that the accused had handled some of it on to waterside workers in Timaru. The ease had merely been brought as an example. ■ Mr Beaufoy said that the accused was an apprentice in the' Papanui, and his parents resided in England. ■ He could only, throw the accused on the mercy of'the Court, and ask that they take his youth into consideration. He intended calling the captain of the vessel to speak as to'.the accused's character. BoxingsThere is every-reason to believe that tho middle-weight contest between Eddie Parker andLackio McDonald for the New Zealand title will-prove one of the, best bouts ever staged by the/Timaru Boxing Association; The match has been fixed for Thursday, June 25th, ,i]i the' Theatre Royal. For. the past month or two boxing enthusiasts throughout the Dominion, have been watching with, interest the performances of Parker and McDonald.. 'lt was-towards the end of last year that the southerner took the middle-weight titlo from Parker at Dunedin. Early this year, a return contest was' staged, the verdict being a draw. Since then several Associations have been angling for a third bout, but the Timaru Boxing Association received the Boxing Council's approval to stage the contest. Parker hasTecently twice defeated the Australian, Max Gornik, after fifteen rouncls of good boxing on each occasion, and has also twice met, Hughie Dwycr, defeating him on the first occasion, and drawing oir the second. McDonald is in excellent; condition, and ' has lately been "spelling'? in preparationfor the clash with Parker. High Schools' Board. ' The chairman made sympathetic reference to the indisposition of the Rector of the Boys' High School (Mr W. Thomas), and, expressed the hope that he would soon be restored to health. On the motion of Mr Orwin' a'vote of sympathy was accorded to Mr and Mrs*R.' J. MeKeown in the death of their son. Mr Revell asked if something could not be done to expedite the additions to the Girls' High School. They had been told that the Director of- Education would visit' Timarn J.o look into the matter, but it had been held up for three or four months, and;-there was still no'indication that the projected visit would be made. The chairman said that the Minister of Education would be passing through Timaru on Weduesday, and if the Board wished he would, then interview him with regard to the matter. This was agreed to. The Finance Committee reported that the new classrooms at the Boys' High School would be completed in about a fortnight's time, and would be a deeid ed acquisition to the school buildings. At the Girls' High School it would be necessary to undertake repairs to tho roof. After a thorough inspection of the grounds at the back of the girls' school it had been decided that before undertaking tho work of laying out. a comprehensive plan of work should bo decided on, and carried out as opportunity offered. A report on this matter would be submitted at the next meetiug of the Board. The Education Committee of the Neiv Zealand and South Seas Exhibition wrote stating that the executive of the Education Court found it necessary to make an appeal to all educational bodies throughout the Dominion for financial assistance in fitting up 'the Education Court; Contributions had I so far been promised as follows:—Education Department £1250, Otago Edu- ! cation Board £250, Otago Universitv £IOO, Otago High Schools' Board £IOO, Dunedin Technical School Board i £,50. Otago branch of the Teachers' Institute £3O: total £I7BO. -The sum | required was about £3OOO, 'so that £1220 was still required, the officers of the various bodies mentioned were being granted leave to - assist the work, so that the contributions were very much larger than the sums indicated." The Education Department would defray the cost of cartage to railway

i, . station, steamer, etc., in.the' various education. districts, and the cost of transit to Dunedin, so that apart from any grant made, the only expense to b/ met by- educational authorities and schools* would be that of preparing and packing the exhibits. The committee , trusted that the Board would see its way to mahe a' grant as generous as its funds would permit. Dr. Talbot proposed that.£2s should be offered/subject to authorisation by the Department. This was agreed to. The chairman was granted leave of absenro in view of : the forthcoming session of Parliament.'
