PERSONAL. Mr A. E. Denham, of the Bank of Australasia, is away on holiday. General News. A local taxi-driver, Mr J. Welsh, •was driving a faro up the Kaceeourae road on Saturday when the car shot off the centre of the road, through a gorse fence, and into a ditch on the other side of the fence. Xo one wis hurt, but the assistance of a tractionengine had to be obtained to extricate the car.
Power Board. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Power Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs J. Cow (chairman'), A. McFarlane, W. 11. Bundle, E. P. Nienll, 11. Morris. A. J. Magson, S. Smith, W. T. Lill, and W. H. Woods. At the request of the Asliburton County Council, it was decidod to erect live lights in tho Hinds township. The engineer-secretary reported that the main lino to Mayfield was practically completed. Supplies had been given to Marawhiti, Grsenstreet, and the lines at tho back of the Springfield estate.
The consulting engineer reported that the 11,000-volt lines between Ashburton aud the (Springfield estate would be duplicated. Prom tho number of cooking ranges now installed, everything should bo done to make tho service as reliable as possible. The maximum n?xt year would bo much above the present capacity of the Public Works Department's transformers, and it would be policy to officially communieato with them to mako sure that they would have additional capacity for the Board's loud.
The inspector reported that tho Al-lentou-Winchmore, Waterton-Fleiuing-tou, and Greeustreet houso-wiring contracts had been completed. During the month an additional 11 electric cookors and nine water-heaters liad been connected to tho supply. A total of 59 applications had been recoived for' current during the past month, and 75 now consumers had been connoctod. Tho Finance and Works Committee reported that tenders had been called .for switch gear in connexion with the rearrangement of lines, and for 100 k.v.a. 11,000-6600 volt transformers for mr.in sub-stations. Sharebrokors had been advised that a new loan of £30,000 was being issued shortly. The financial' statement showed tho rovenuo for May to have been £2337 2s 7d.
It was decided to proceed with the raising of an additional loan of £30,000 at 5$ per cent.
The secretary-engineer reported that whon sharebrokors knew that tho Board intended to raise a fresh Joan the whole of the £30,000 was pencillod in within n week. '
Basket Ball Association. The formation of an Ashburton Basket Ball Association was decided upon at a mooting of over twenty enthusiasts, including representatives of the various Ashburton clubs, which was held last night. Mr W. H. Woods prosided,
The following officers wore elected:— President, Mr R. J. Thompson; vicopresidents, Missos E. Harris, 'G. Tait, and Messrs W. E. Lano, J. McElhinney, W. F. Watters, C. G. M. Boyce; secretary and treasurer, Miss I. King. It was decided that the comtnittee consist of a delegate, who is a' non-player, from each affiliated club. June 27th was the date set down for the commencement of the competition. Tho affiliation fee was fixed at 5s a team, and it was decided to appeal to thoso who had 'a knowledge of the game to assist with the rcferoeing. Kifle Oluh. The committco of the Ashburton Miniature rßiflo Club met last night,, Mr F. Clark presiding. Several vice-presi-dents wrote accepting office. Tho secretary reported that; there would be a. profit as a result of the championship. meeting. The matter of rearranging, tho programme to attract inoro competition in the individual championship was discussed, but a decision was held over till a later "date. The County championship meeting was fixed for August 29th. It was decided that all club prizes be trophies. It was agreed to firo the club's first County . Shield, Match at' Hinds, and that tho club bo divided into three teams for tho contest fori tho Bullock Shield. Tho conditions will be similar to those of last year, and each shoot will extend over a fortnight. Messrs A.. J. Millichamp, JP, Clark and D. F. Keir were appointed selectors.

Mr TV. H. Pengelly, -who has been relieving ai the local station, in the absence of Mr W. Kemp and Mr A. Burt/Jias returned to Christchu-.eh", The electric light continues to give dissatisfaction by periodical turns of dimness. This was particularly noticeable for tw6 hours on Fridav night. Some timo ago four street-lighta were promised for the lighting of the township, but so. far hare no:- been installed.
METHVEN. ✓ On Saturday the Methven Golf Club held a bogey handicap, and a nine-hole stroke handicap was played by the ladies. The men's bogey handicap resulted as follows:—G. Heney, all square, 1; P. Cookson, 1 down, 2; E. Thomas, 2 down, 3; T. Macartney, 3 down. The ladies' nine-hole stroke handicap resulted: Mrs Thomas, 65—18—47, 1; Mrs Heney, 70—14—56, 2. The winner of the previous nine-hole stroke handicap was Mrs Holmes, 5-I—lo—l4.
NEWLAND. On Friday evening, a very successful concert, organised by Messrs B. C. Donnelly and T. "Wakclin (chairman of the school committee), was held in the schoolroom. The object was to raise funds to assist with the building of a Public Hall at Fairton. In spito of the boisterous weather conditions, there was a large attendance. There were many present from Fairton, Seafiekl, and Pendarves, and the audience proved most appreciative. The pro. gramme, which was given 'by Misses E. and B. Claridge and party, was as follows: Pianoforte duet, Misses Jeffs and Ingram; song, Miss B. Claridge; instrumental items "(guitar and ukelele), Misses E. Claridge, B. and D. Bain, R. Jeffs, and E. Ingram, and Messrs J. Hall, W. Green, P. Curran. V. Cullen, and G. Manchester; pianoforte solo, Miss Audrey Ruddick; xylophone solo, Mr J. Hall; songs, Miss Millar; v»cal duet, Misses Claridge; songs, Mr Cullen; steel guitar solo, Mr \V. Gracn; violin solo, Miss E. Claridge. Miss B. Claridge acted as accompanist. Mr J. T. Fairton Hal ICominittoe, thanked the people'of Newland for their thought- '" fulness. After supper, dancing was enjoyed for some hours, Mr A. Bennison acting as M.C., and the music being provided by Mr W. v ßankin. Extras Were played by Miss M. Petcre (Ashbufton). Mrs B. O. Donnellv is visiting her father, Mr Torless, of Cust. RAKAIA. At a raeeting.'of the locaF Foresters' Lodge,, the secretary of the daiice com. mitteo reported that arrangements for the fancy dress ball were well in hand. As great interest is being taken in the function it was decided to offer prizes for the best fancy costumes and to appoint judges. DORIE. A football match was■ played at Dorie on Saturday afternoon between the Dorie team and" a team from the Rakaia Club, comprising junior and third grade players. The we&ther was very stormy, with occasional showers of rain, and the 6outh-west wind made goal kicking impossible. The Rakaia backs handled the ball well and proved too fast for the heavier Dorie forwards. The game ended in a win for Rakaia by 12 points to 3. Tries were scored for Rakaia by D. Cornelius; J. O'Reilly, W. Mead, and E. Henderson. 0. Campbell scored: foY Dorie. Mr A. Shannon was referee. After the match the Rakaia team was entertained to tea in the Afdamine Hall. Mr W. A. Smith, manager of the Rakajia team, thanked the Dorie team, and Mr D. McDonald replied on behalf of Dorie. STAVELEY. A very pleasant social evening was held by the Loyal Staveley Lodge in the hall on Friday evening. A dark, cold night, with snow still on the ground affected the attendance, but those who braved the night spent a happy time: "Wellman's band supplied »■ the music, extras being played by Messrs W, Campbell, /R. Alexander, ff G. Petrie, and Chapman Brothers. I The Messrs Syme Brothers carried out j the duties of" M.C.'s, and to Mr A. Syme (the secretary) is due much of the success of the evening. Lodge members, with friends, attended from Methven, Mayfield, and other local districts.
