Her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson and partv attended the Kreisler concert at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night. Misses D. M. and L. J. Ransome (Timiiru), Miss L. W. Bonith (Timaru), and Mrs C. A. Crowe (Geraldine) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. Mrs E. R. Guinnes's (Timaru) and Mr and Mrs J. Murdoch (Hokitikn) are staving at the United Service Hotel. Mrs R. The proceeds were in nidi of the St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Little River. The stall was in the hands of Mesdames J. Flynn and- Keenan, who intend holding another sale later in the month. The> members of St. John's Church intend holding a gigantic bazaar next Easter, the proceeds to, be in aid of church funds. In to-day's issue the committee of the Destitute Patients' Fund (Christchurch Hospital) tenders its .sincere thanks to all who assisted in making its recent appeal to the public so successful. BALL AT BURNHAM.

The Hurnliam Camp Sports and Reerratiou Club held its annual ball in the gymnasium, "Military Camp, Burnham, on Thursday. The decorations consisted of u trellis work of streamers in maroon jiiul gold, the colours of the club, suspended above the heads of the dancers, and intermingled with Hags and foliage. Tho long tables in the supper-room, where a sumptuous repast was served, were very prettily decorated by tho ladies. Spirited music was supplied by Large's Jazz Band, and, judging by the numerous reouests for encores, wpj much appreciated. Extras were supplied by Mr and Mrs W. M. Johnston and Mr A. Shadbolt. WOOPBURY TENNIS CLUB'S BALL.

The Woodbury Public Tennis Club organised a most succesful ball, which was held last Wednesday evening. The evening being fine and frosty, there was a very, large attendance, including many visitors from Geraldine and surrounding districts, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Excellent music was supplied I>y Miss Morgan's Orchestra (Timaru) .and Mr C. McDonald carried out the duties of M.C, Extras were played Furby, 1. Patrick, M. Lvsaght. M. Fifield and Mr S. Gibbs. The hall had been, decdrated effectively, hundreds of pale , green streamers forming a canopy from a red central hoop, and -ill the„ lamps had red crepe paper shades. In the-3Uppei'-room red chrysanthemums and autumc foliage were used for table decorations, and the lamps had red shades., During an interval the secretary of the cluW, Mr Marks, thanked all who had attended, some having come a considerable distance. Mr . Maries also asked the assembled company to stand as a mark of lespect and sympathy for Mr and Mrs R. J. MoKeown, whose little son, Willie, had passed away that day, Mr McKeown being patron of the club. There no time to give notice, the function could not be postponed. DEATH OP MRS J. M. JENNINGS

There passed - away, at her residence, Tinwald, on Saturday, one of Canterbury's early pioneers in the person of Mrs J. M. Jennings. The deceased lady, who was in her 97th year at the. time of her death, came out to Canterbury from England in 1858 in the ship Clontarf. Shortly after her arrival in the Dominion her husband who had accompanied her from England, died, anfl Mrs Jennings took up the position of headmistress of the Church School, Papanui. When the first State school .was commenced at Papanui, Mrs JcnniUgs became its headmistress, a position which she continued to fill for a period of about 20 years. She then joined her daughter, who - had.commenced a private school, and taught at that institution until some <25 years ago, when she retired. On her retirement the late Mrs Jennings" took up her residence at TinI wald.

COLUMBUS-GRENFELL. ' Tlio wedding was celebrated at St. Saviour's Church, Sydenham, recently of Amelia, elder daughter of Mr Wm. Grenfell and the late Mrs Cicely Grenfell, Spreydon, and William, only son of Mr and Mrs Wm, Columbus, Opawa. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Canon Mutter and Mr Hoskins ]vresided at the organ. The bride, who was given away by Mr J. Boyee, wore a simple frock of ivory taffeta, with sleeves and waterfall panels of fine lace caught at the side with pearl 1 ornament Her silk net veil, hand embroidered, in arum lilies, fell to the hem of her frock from a Russian coronet of pearls and orange blossom and she carried a shower bouquet of hothouse flowers, with tulle and ribbon streamers. Misses Valerie and Doris Columuus, sisters of the bridegroom, attended the bride as bridesmaids, the former wearing heliotrope and silver shot taffeta with silver lace sleeves and side panels, and ostrich feather..mount at side. Miss Doris Columbus wore a pretty frock of apple gi-een satin, with gporgetto flutJngs of sarnie colour. B.oth maids wore tulle scarves and largo picturo hats of tullo and silver tissue, trimmed with a large rose, and carried shower bouquets to tone with their The, bridegroom was attended by Mr William Grenfell, brother of the bride, as best man, and Mr Neil Angus acted as groomsman. The wedding breakfast was held atthe Cafe Cecil, High street, where a reception was also held at night, about seventy guests being present. Musical items were given by Miss Bessie Browne, Miss Norma Towart, Miss Peters and Mr Frank Macdonald. When Mr and Mrs Columbus left for their honeymoon, the bride was wearing a tailored grey frock, grey hat with ostrich feather mount, and brown fur coat.

ODDFELLOWS' BALL AT WAIAU.

The '-Royal'' Lodge of Oddfellows, Waiau, held their annual ball in the Public Hall on Wednesday night. The elements were very unpropitious, but nevertheless there -was a very large attendance, the floor being Yather more than comfortably filled. Great pains had been taken to make the hall attractive for the occasion, and in this respect, much success has been achieved Pink and (gold streamers were arranged in canopy. style, wirTTecoloured balloons and butterflies added to the effect. The stage, burnished as a lounge, was decorated with pink and gold streamers, palms and shrubs. Excellent music was supplied by Miss Tilleyshort's Orchestra, and the extras played by Miss C. Higgins and Mr M. J. Meßryde. The grand march was led by P.O. Bro. Powis and Y.G. Sister Clark and the regalia of the brethren added to the gaiety of the scene. In the official set were P.G. Bro. Powis and Y.G. Sister Clark, F.S. Bro. C. E. Derrett and Sister Williams, P.G., Bro. A. G. C're.xl. and Sister , Derrett, and P.G. Bro. J. Williams and Mrs Creed. On Thursday evening the bachelors and spinsters ofGreenpark district held their combined annual ball in the Greenpark Memorial Hall. Nearly 7 three hundred guests and friends assembled, and a most enjoyable evening was spent/ The hall was gaily decorated with streamers,of black and gold, the lights being softly shaded with roso pink.. The energetic members of the committee for the success of the eveningj were Messrs Ellesmere, Stalker (chairman), C. Brown, D. Hunter, G. iSchroeder, H. Woods, Firth, Messrs F. Chapman and E. Bearman joint secretaries, Misses I. Stalker, R. Schroeder, M. Carr, K. Rickerby, I. Can- and A Rickerby. Spirited music was supplied by Bettle's Dance" Orchestra, Mr W. Newton playing several Tho grand march was led off by Miss Hilda Chapman • and Mr C. Brown. The winners of. the "Lucky Spot Waltz" -were •Miss Niia Keast and Mr Douglas Suckling. Later in the evening Mr J. Stalker, on behalf of the benedicts, thanked the bachelors, and spinsters for the enjoyable evening, saying that thebenedicts hoped to return the compliment in the near future.
