Social and Personal. Dr. and Mrs W. E. Gibson and Miss Marjorie Gibson (Elizabeth street) are visiting Christchurch. Mrs Laidlaw (Wai-iti road) left on Saturday for Duncdiu. Mrs J. Guthrie (Seftou street) is in Christchnrch. Miss Greta Paterson (Scfton street) left for Dunedin on Saturday. Mr and Mrs F. S. A vent (Christ- j church) spent the week-end -with Mrs G. S. Cray (Seaview terrace). Mrs Alistcr Mackenzie (Edgeeliff) is paving a short visit to Christchurch. Miss Shirtcliffc left during the week to join the Maunganui for Sydney. The engagement is announced of Miss Kate Ellen Russell, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Russell (Maori Hill, Tiraaru), to Mr Gerald Muir Graham (Wellington), eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. Graham (East Gore). Ploughing Match Committee. At a meeting of the Timaru Ploughing Match Committee, it was decided that the annual match should be held on Saturday, August Ist, in a paddock offered by Mr W. Orbell behind the Levels Homestead. On the motion of Mr W. Divan, it was agreed that no 'hand-work should be allowed in the ploughiug, and that agents should be allowed to give an exhibition of tractor ploughing. The following additional patrons were elected: —Messrs T. Gunnion, G. B. Cartwright, Donald Grant, W. J. Clarke, and W. H. Orbell. South Canterbury Hunt. At a meeting of the committee of the South Canterbury Hunt, it was decided to hold the annual ball on July 17th,' the night before the steeples meeting. The following Dance Committee was elected: —Mesdamcs O, L. Orbell, A. S. El worthy, H. Elworthy, ■W. H. Orbell, Misses L. Cartwright. and I. Jones, C. L. Orbell, F. F. Xealc, 11. Orbell, M. Harper, and YV. Smith. "Sew members were elected as follows:—Miss Murphy, Messrs J. Oldfiold, L. Burgess, J. Wallis, A. Bourn, E.'Ellis, F. Franer, jun., W. Casey, W. Gliddo'n, W. Dorc, and B. C. Cordy. After discussion, it-was decided'that Messrs A. S. Elworthy and F. F. Neale should wait upon the South Canterbury Jockey Club to ask for a donation. Mr Guinness suggested that the point-to-point meetings should be handicap instead of heavy-weight and lightweight. •The Fairlie .Committee were strongly in favour of this, as sidered-that-more "-horses' would be catered for..- Another matter in whicn they' were .interested wasthe inclusion of an aniatenr trotting race to replace the .hack .race. At a combined meeting of representatives from the Borough Council, W.C.T.U., Plunket Society and Mechanics' Institute, to- discuss matters in connexion with the proposed new library building, the Mayor (Mr G. B. Cartwright) said "he was prepared to give £IOO towards tho scheme." Tho Young Ladies' Basket Ball Cln.b held a euchre party and 'dance in £ic parish hall on' Thursday evening, about 100. ladies taking part' "In the ouchro tournament prizes were won by Miss E.
