RANGIORA. At the meeting of Vhe CEtangiora ;Borough Council held on Friday night, the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade submitted the resolution passed at the annual meeting of the Fire Brigade, requesting the Council to take immediate steps to procure an up-to-date motor pump, For the use of the J?rigade, similar to the Dennis pump, lne matter was referred to the Finance Committee for a report. I The Eangiora Borough Council, at its meeting on Friday night last, received a communication from the chairman or the Main Highways Board stating that Ashley street, Victoria street and Migii street, from the western boundary ot Ashley street corner, may be deemed tn boeontinuations of Highways. Manv complaints having been received of the large number of stray dogs which are a nuisance and a danger to motor traffic, the Eangiora Borougn Council on Fridav night decided to ap- • point an extra dog inspector for one week. The Town Clerk was also given authority to sue for all unregistered dogs. WAIKARI. A meting of tho Plunket Society was held in-fcho Council rooms after a lapse of several months, owing to the epidemic. Mrs Blunden .presided over a good attendance and congratulated the society on the excellent work- which had been done in the last six months. a motion of sympathy with Dr Campbell in his long illness was passed ve ™ new members were entered on tnc books, and it was decided to augment tho funds with another afternoon about July. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdnmes Campbell, •Mcdonald, Matson, Johnson and A. i. Earl. KIMBERLEY. An enjoyable evening was spent on , Thursday in the local hall on the occasion of the wedding of Miss R. Beaman to Mr Knight. Tho hall was artistically decorated with pink and creamcoloured streamers and green foliage. The ovening passed away quickly in dancing and musical items. Songs were given by Mrs A. Stott. Music fdr the dancing was supplied by Mrs -Payne (piano), Messrs S. Byrne (violin), and I. Symo (saxaphone) and Mr G. Matson. 'Mr Groves Reveley carried out the duties of M.O. , ~ There was a good attendance at the fortnightly euchre party and dance. The prizes were won by Mrs G. Gartery and Mr Olridge. After supper a dance was held, the mußio for which was supplied by Mr Q. Manson. Mr C. McCausland carried out the duties of M.C AKAROA. Prior to Mb departure last day for Ohristcburch, where he has been transferred on promotion from tho local Post Office, Mr Leslie Parris was entertained in the Presbyterian Sunday schoolroom by the members. and the young people of the church. During an interval before supper was served the Rev. F. J. Tylee expressed regret that the church was losing another of its young men from tho district. He congratulated Mr Parris on his promotion >and conveyed to him the hearty good wishes of all concerned for his future wellbeing. He then handed tho guest of the evening a pair of military'Tiairbrusbes in a case as a token of esteem and goodiwill. Mr Parris briefly acknowledged the. kind" expressions of opinion and the accompanying gift. Mr Hubert Collins, who has been on the working staff of the local Borough Council for a number of years| acting lately as assistant foreman, lets Akaroa on Saturday with his family for Sumner, where he haa secured a position under Mr George Harper, foreman of fiumner Borough Council, and previously of Akaroa in a similar capacity. Mr Collins has been one of the Akaroa. Football Club's most prominent players. The local branch, 'Working in support of St. Saviour's "Orphanage, held a "gift afternoon" in the Anglican parish room on Thursday last. A ready response had been made to the appeal of the president (Mrß A. C. Piirchas) and her committee, and the proceeds of the effort by sale of produce, etc., afternoon tea and donations totalled just under £ls. This amount the branch will use in the purchase of material for working up into garments, etc., for the benefit of the children in the institittion. LITTLE RIVER. A meeting to consider the holding of a children's fancy dress ball was held in the Coronation Library on Friday. Present.: Mesdames French, Aitken, Cradock, Smith. Reynolds, Humphreys, Whatman, Traill, A. Thomson, Webster, C. Breifoneyer and Mc Pherson, Misses Bell, Hodgson, Higgins and Miller, and Messrs Whatman, Cradock and McNaughton. Mr Whatman was elected chairman. < It was decided to hold a children's fancy dress ball on Friday, July 31st. Mrs Cradock offered to pro-, vido the music for the ball ana the classes in preparation. The offer was accepted with thanks. Glasses to teach the children are to be held every Saturday afternoon, starting on Saturday week nest. Misses Bell, Hodgson, Miller, Higgins, and Mesdames McPherson, French and Palmer were appointed to conduct the. dancing classes. The fol* lowing were appointed a committee of management: Mr W. J. Whatman (chairman), Mesdames Smith, Reynolds, Aitken, Humphreys, Whatman,'Traill, A. Thomson, Webster and L. Breitmeyer and Messrs Cradock, McNaughton and Stuart. The question of the allocation of any surplus from the fete was left to be dealt with later. A painful accident happened to Mr Allan Shadbolt, of Pigeon Bay, on Tuesday. Mr Shadbolt was caught in the belt of a portable saw bench and l thrown violently. Both upper and lower jaws were broken, and he was taken to the Akaroa Hospital, where he was operated upon. He is making good recovery. GREENDALE. A very successful concert, in connexion with the Greendale Presbyterian Church, ; was held in the Orange Hall on Thursday evening. The Rev. J. J. Bates presided over a very largo gathering, the hall being full. A splendid programme of pianoforte solos, vocal solos, duets, quartettes, recitations and addresses was given. A special feature was the presence of the Lyric Four, of Christchurch, whose singing of quartettes, duets and solos piovided a musical treat rarely enjoyed in the outlying country districts. Those contributing items were Mrs J. J. Bates, pianoforte solos; songs, Miss B. Rudd, Miss A. Shipley, Messrs Blakeley, Johnson, Jonea, Ridgen, and Miss D. Rout; duet, Messrs Blakeley and Johnson; quartettes, Messrs Blakeley, Joluison, More and Morgan; recitations, Miss Sloane and the Rev. T. Paterson. Addresses were given by the Revs. O. Burnet and J. J. Bates. The accompanists were Mrs J. J. Bates, Mrs E. Ridgen and Miss McClelland.

BROOMFIELD. i Considering that Friday night was i so rough, there was a very good attendance at the fortnightly euchre party and danco. The prizes, given by Mr and Mrs J. Hadler, were won by Miss Gorrie and Mr Les Fleming, the consolation prizes going to Miss Elderton and Mr Tom Croft. Supper was served, after which the hall was cleared for dancing, which was kept up till < the early hours of tho morning, to j music supplied by Mr and Mrs Wornall j and Mrs Belcher. Mr Cook was M.C Mr Wornall, in presenting the prizes, proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the donors of the prizes. A large crowd of shooters gathered at Mt. Brown on Thursday morning to participate in the haro drive, organised by Mr I. F. Croft, over Mt. Brown and the surrounding farms. Luncheon was kindly provided by Mr and Mrs Croft. Over 170 hares were bagged. LINCOLN. The Lincoln Ladies' Hockey Club played their first match on Thursday afternoon, when they met tho Dunsandel team on the Lincoln ground. A very interesting game resulted in a win for the visiting team by three goals to nil. Considering that the- Lincoln Club has been formed only a few weeks, the result was very gratifying. The following represented Lincoln: Goal, Miss Arps; backs, Mrs Hammond and Miss Smith; half-backs, Misses M. Kenst, N. Watkins and Button; forwards, Misses Bigham. L. "Watkins, Smith (captain), Parker and Mrs E. J. Cooke. The weekly social and 'dance in aid of the Recreation {'(round was held in tho Druids' Hall. There was a, very fair attendance and a very enjoyable evening wn,s spent, the* music being supplied by Mr 11. Tern-.

OURUHIA. A very eiijoyablo euchre evening and danco was held in the Ouruhia school on Thursday ovening. Prizes were won by Mrs H. McMillan and Mr J. Lange. During the evening, a rug given by Mr H. McMillan was repeatedly sold, with the result that the piano fund was augmented by about £7. Votes of thanks were passed to the late chairman* Mr E. H. Ashby, and thd members of the old committee for their energy in raising funds for the purchase of the new piano. A meeting of the Social Committee was held last week, when it Was decided to hold a challenge euchre match with Spenccrville at Ouruhia on June 19th. The members' of the newly-formed branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union were the guests of Mrs Alfred Dawbcr, at "Noumai," on Thursday afternoon. Practically all the ladies of tho district were present. Mils T. B. Taylor headed a party from the Christchurch executive, and under her guidance matters in connexion with the branch were discussed. Mrs Taylor gave an interesting address. Motorists are complaining that they can see very little benefit.as yet from the taxes they paid in the year. Marshland road in Ouruhia is particularly rough at present. Repairs are urgently necessary to the approaches to the Styx bridge. Passengers by the even-, -ing trains are again asking, when Chariey's station is to have the lamp that was authorised some years ago.
