The cabled reports of the open chaui-. pibnship of the United States, played at Worcoster, Massachusettß, during the first week of this month, were very brief, but the feature of the meeting was apparentlv the invulnerable steadiness of Bobby Jones, at present the amateur champion of the States, aud by almost. universal consent' the best amateur player in the world to-day. In fact, if a vote of golfers were tak?a Bobby Jones would probably get a big vote as' the world's first golfer, amateur or professional. -This year Jones tied with Willie MacFarlane, a well-known . American .professional with the fine score of 291 for 7,2 holes, which covered the championship.' These two were scut out to play 36 holes''to decide the ti-». They were still level, at the end. of 18 1 holes with 75 -each,- and their cards for the second'lS were 72 for MacFaxlana \ and 73' for Jones. :MacFarlane, the professional, then'squeezed home at the end of six rounds, 108 holes, by one. stroke. MaeFarlanc is a veteran, but has not taken a prominent placo in.the American open in recent years. He.is better known as a club-maker and.in- | structor. : It is illustrative of the irony of-golf thati.a player ;iike MacFarlane I should-have' his day out, and snatch vie*- [ tpry-fr.ora.a golfer like Jones, who has a romarkable Veeord in the Americau open.'
Bobby. Jones, made his first appearance in the national open event in 1920, when he .was 19 years of. age. Edward Bay, the British professional, won with £95, and Jones was in eighth place with 299. In 1921 Jim Barnes won at Columbia with 259, and Jones was fifth , with-313. In 1922 Sarazen was the winner with 28S, and Jones tied for see.~j
ond place vritli 259. In 1023 Jones won at InwMd with 256, after a tie with B. A. Cfnickshank. Last Tear, at Oakland Hills, in the vilest "weather. Cyril Walker won with 297. and Jones was second with 300. This Tear Jonej ties for first place again. He has nonplayed in six open championships of four ronnds each for the following scores:—
Ihis is an average of-one-tenth of a stroke over level fours for each hole of the six championships, and there is nothing.m .the history either of the British or of th 0 American championships to equal it. As a golfer of eonsment, almost invariable brilliancv, Bobby Jones stands in a class by himself, but he has .not yet .produced the Hash or super-brilliancy that is necessary to win championships decisively, mere .is 110 player living who could Jiold his own with Jones in a series of stroko competitions, but there are a dozen w ho are always likelv to beat J"m m a oue-day or two-day tost. Jones never seems to have "a day off." out it is the man who has a "dav out" wio wins championships..- Jones win . oAgf nov! hough ~ hc is onl >' 24 y eai ' s AVONOALE LADIES' CLUB. , ws piayed on Saiurday between Mis« "FT M Word ( 3)' «id. : MiM L»S (17 and tli?
