THE NEW BISHOP.

SYNOD ARRIVES AT DECISION.

NAME NOT DIVULGED,

After a special session lasting for four days—a good portion of "which was spent in conference and tho arrangement of methods of procedure —tho Christchurch Diocesan Synod last night reached a decision regarding the election of a Bishop for the diocese. The Commissary, Dean Carriugton, stated last evening that at tho evening session of Synod yesterday, oh tho motion of Arch'deacou P. B. seconded by Mr 11. D. Andrews (Chancellor), it was resolved unanimously—with the exception of one. dissentient vote—to invito a certain clergyman to becomo Bishop of the Diocese of Christchurch.

Synod resolved that tho name of the clergyman should not be divulged by members, unless and until ho signified his acceptance of tho invitation. This being the only business of tho electoral Synod, it adjourned sine die. In tho event of the invitation not being accepted, tho Synod will bo reassembled in order to move a fresh nomination. Unless there bo any special urgency, tho Synod, however, will not be called together before the usual annual session in October.

It was resolved to give tho thanks of the Synod to tho nowspapers of tho city for their reports of tho public sessions, and especially for their consideration in regard to the confidential character of tho private sessions of the conferences. In tho final stages of tho latter, a very great appreciation was expressed by tho members of tho manner in which Mr H. D. Andrews had discharged the duties of chairman, and of tho thorough work of tho Committee of Enquiry and tho Ecv. Canon Galwcy in preparation for tho Synod. Thanks were also recorded to the ladies and gentlemen who had given Synod members hospitality, and to tho secretaries and sentinels.

Dean Carrington intimated that a reply from tho clergyman invited to accept the office could not bo expected till next week.
