4/4. uW > ii, k)<i tl j; i' for the wonderful 99 THE Segrave Wins the Grand Prix de Provence. A Triple Hairpin Bend included in a Track Race Reprinted from The Motor, March 17 f 1925. The Grand Prix de Provence and Hartford Cup race, which opened the season at Miramas Autodrome, resulted in yet another triumph for the wonderful 11 h.p. Talbot cars, shod with " Englebert" tyres. The Hartford Cup was won' by Segrave, and the Talbot team were first, second and fourth in the general classification against cars of all categories from 1,100 c.c. up to four litres. Duller, who drove the third Talbot, experienced rather a curious mishap, as after coming into the pits to change the plugs, his mechanic forgot to put the small retaining clips in position, with the result that the terminals of the high tension wire jumped off two of the plugs. Duller thus finishing on two cylinders. In the 1,500 c.c. category the Talbots liad an absolute walk-over, Segrave, Conelli and Duller being first, second and third respectively, despite the fact that superchargers were dispensed with on this occasion. The race was a very severe endurance test, 505 kilometres on a rough track, on to which an additional triple loop had been constructed in order to introduce the elements of braking and cornering. The only really. serious competitors to the Talbots throughout the whole race were the two-litre Bugattis, driven by Vidal, who came in third, and Lieut. Glen Kidstone, R.N., who was making his first appearance in a big event, fifth. The added loop was the cause of many retirements during the race, only 13 finishing out of 24 starters. The continual strain of braking and skidding placed responsibility on the " Englebert" tyres. The length of the race proved too much for some chassis, whilst in other cases drivers damaged their cars by t striking the pallisading. From the spectators' point of view, the loop proved most exciting. There was a large public attendance, larger than at any previous meeting at Miramas, which proved the wisdom of the track directors in opening their racing season whilst the Riviera coast was still crowdedwith visitors.
