GENERAL NEWS. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Ashburtou Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held in the lodge-room on Thursday night, Bro. G. Ede presiding. Sick pay amounting to £l7 -la Scl for 10 brethren was passed for payment, and accounts for £3099 8s 9d were also passed. Three cancjidates were proposed for membership, and two were initiated into the Order. It- was resolved to send Bros, fc'arney and Broker letters of sympathy' in their sad bereavement. The officers for the ensuing term were installed by P.O. Bros. E. Childs and J. Donaldson. After lodge a social hour was held. Sailors' Society. Mrs R. Galbraith presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ashburtou branch of the British and Foreign Sailors' Socio ty yesterday ■ afternoon. Before proceeding with the ordinary business, Mrs Galbraith. referred in feeling terms to the recent death of Mrs R. Stock, who, for a number of years, had been a valued member of St. Stephen's choir, and had also, taken great interest iu the Women's Guild and other organisations in the town. A motion of sympathy was carried in silence, the inem- ! bers standing. j A number of musical items were tbeu given, and :t pleasant hour spent in social intercourse. Methodist Choir Concert. To supplement the funds of the new Cliurc-h Ladies' Guild bazaar, members of the Baring square Methodist' Church' choir, together with a number- of friends, gave a successful concert iu the church on Thursday night under the baton of Mr H. A. Humphreys. The attendance was very, good, and each item was well received." The Rev. T. W. MAYFIELD., In the Band Hall on Wednesday afternou and evening, a. special effort was made in connexion with the .\laylield Methodist Church to increase thu circuit funds. It took tho Jornv of a bazaar and high tea. ' From start to finish tlio halt was crowded, . and the people spent freely. Tho t£a was a record one, Loth as to nunibers_ and takings. The butcher's shop did a roaring trado disposing of two line bullocks, and six fat sheep given for the occasion. A largo quantity of grain, produce and coal found ready buyers. Valuable prizes were offered for the competitions, the childrcns' and young ladies' competitions creating great amusement. The following; were the stallholders:: Produce, Messrs Bennett and Scown; fancy goods, Mesdames Dillon and Scown; sweets stall, Misses Edis and Hyde; fruit salad, Mrs Allen; butcher's shop,. Messrs I,ill and Dunstan; art gallery, Mr H. Bsaumont; wood sawing and nail driving competitions. Messrs Parker and Oafcley;» tea tables, Mesdaroes Williams, Oakley, Hyde, Holland, Belsliaw, Beaumont, Bennett, Painter, Misses Beddick, and Hawkins, Mr E. Bennett, Mrs Tarbottom. During the evening tho Rev. Belshaw thanked all those who had in the least contributed to the success of tho day. The fund' benefited to the extent of £9O.

The lirst .of a series of socials in aid of the Anglican Church Building Fundwas held in tho Band Hall, Mrs McIlraith *vas hostess and carried out her duties in a most affable manner. The evening was spent in dancing and a number of interesting items by the children. The Mayfield Orchestra -supplied the music, a large number being present. The following was the programme: Pianoforte solo. The vicar, after eulogising the qualities of the hostess, brought an enjoyable evening to a close. HINDS. The Hinds Hall was crowded on Thursday evening when a social was tendered to Miss Hampton by the Hinds Ladies' Hockey Club. Mr J, Cook, president of the club, referred to the good work done by Miss Hampton as a player and as secretary. Mr J. Davidson, on be-, half of the residents of Hinds, presented Miss Hampton with a beautiful 72 piece dinner set. MOUNT SOMERS. On Thursday afternoon the humidity , was below 60 and the' dew point 23 degrees, almost/. sure indications of tho' snow which fell to a depth of over an inch during the night.. At the time, however, there was not a cloud in tho .. sky and a bitter north-west wind was, blowing. The ovening clouded over with -very stormy looking olouds round the moon, but conditions again by iriovning. The ranges around now have a Tory heavy coating, as far as tho eye can reach. On Wednesday evening a party from tho, Asjjburton Referees' Association gave a demonstration of Rugby rules. Mr Chapman was chief spokesman, and illustrated his remarks by means.or a blackboard, getting front rank support from Messrs Grieve, McLaughlan, and Douglas. At the conclusion' of a very interesting address the visitors weio accorded a vote of thanks. RAKAIA.
