AMBERLEY. ! A committee meeting of the Amberley Golf., Club was held on Thursday evening, Mr G. Fulton presiding. Arrangements for the match against tho Shirley Club on June 21st wero discussed. An anonymous donor presented a golf stick for competition, to ho known as tho "V.C. The members of the All ■■Saints' Mission Guild, until recently known as the Wai.au Mission Guild, held their annual meeting in the' Sunday school : room, when there was :l fair attend- ; ance. The Hev. J. W. 1\ Dyer presided, and gave an interesting address on Cliurch work in general, and Mission work in particular. Ho congratulated the Guild on being the first ot its kind in the Amuri, though he hoped that other branches would be lorined I*fore long. The secretary, Miss iS'male, read several letters Irom missionaries, giving sop'.c idea of the dilficulties under which they labour, and expressing sincere gratitude lor tho help given and for the com tort boxes collected by the Guild. The annual report and balance-sheet, tho foiinei sbewina the good work done during the year, were considered very satisfactory. Miss Smale was thanked for her woik, and was unanimously re-elected secretary. The chairman drew the attention of members to the fact that the Church of England Orphanage at Whakarewa, Nelson, where ovor 40 children are eared for and -educated, would be grateful for gifts of clothing for, tho orphans, and it was decided to arrange to collect, and also to make, some suitable garments lo forward to the Orphanage. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr and Mrs H. A. Green for their valuable assistance in all church work, and regret expressed at theit depaTtuie from the district. Afternoon tea was served and a pleasant social hour spent before dispersing.
WAIPARA. In the "VVaipara schoolroom, representatives of tbe Omihi'and Amberley branches of the Farmers' Union, met a fair attendance of local farmers. After the president, Mr A. Payne, and secretary, Mr Cecil Wornall, of the Amberley Union, had explained the advantages to be gained through becoming members of the union, it was decided unanimously to join up wvtn tlio Omihi branch, and to hold monthly meetings alternately at Omihi and Waiimra, the next meeting to bo held at Waipara, an officer of a. indenting firm will be asked to give an address.
SCARGILL. Last week seven members of the St. John's Dramatic Club (Ttingiora) jour neyed to Scargill and gave a series of plays in the Alexandra Hall in aid of the funds for the local branch of the Plunket Society. Mr. B. Gardner presided civer a crowded audience, there Ibeing many present from waipara, Omihi, Waikari and outlying districts. The performers gave throe short plays, whioh were well received and muoli enjoyed and appreciated by the audience, whioh accorcfea Tihem three liStffty cfregtfS at the conclusion of the. performance. The chairman also called for cheers for Mr and Mrs H. ActonAdams (Tipapa), by whose efforts it had been made possible to have the enjoyable, evening. Supper was handed round and dancing was indulged in until 11.30. The total proceeds from the evening amounted to about £2l. . At the last weekly shoat.of the Scargill Miniature Rifle Club, ' the buttons were won by 0. Johnßon (right) and L SV.irbairn (left), and tho weekly handicap competition was won by A. Batchelor.
ASHLEY BANK. The monthly meeting of tlie Ashley School Commitee waa held recently. Present: Messrs P. J. Lindsay (chairman), G. S. Smith, J. Criglington, J. A. Petrie, and R. Drake. It was decided to tender a farewell to Mr and Mrs F. W. Robertson. The Loburn road, near the Ashley Bridge, is in a shocking condition. Only one track since the recent grading is available tor traffic, and that is full of pot-holes and very .greasy. Telegraph posts are being erected towards Mount Grey Downs along Marshland road. „ LOBURN. Owing to the wet weather, the tennis dance was not as fully attended as was expected, but those present spent a most enjoyable evening. The hall was prettily decorated with green and gold streamers, balloons, and evergreens. 'lhe musio was supplied by Miss Bowuyes (piano), and Mr i£. Sutherland (violin;, Extias ivere played by Misses E. Galletley, T. Menry, A. Kennedy, and Mrs M. iTitzgibbon." Vocal items given by Mr J. Massee were much appreciated. Much amusement was caused by tlie balloon dauce, which was eventually won by Miss Thelma Henry and Mr Jack Galletley. Mr Cedric Croft carried out the duties of M.C. , x A very interesting lantern lecture was given recently by Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., representing the W.l/.A., 1 his subject being the South African tonr of the Parliamentary Empire delegates. Tho fourth weekly euchre tournament was held on Thursday eveningThe prizes were given by Mr and Mrs T. Pulley, and won by Mrs Brady and Mr Brown, consolation prizes going to Miss M. Galletley and Mr S. Ferguson.
BELFAST. The monthly meeting of the Belfast School Committee was held on Wednesday last. Present: Messrs W. P. Spencer (chairman), D. C.. McArthnr, W. Price, E. Graham, W. Sellers, A. Johnson, and A. E. Lawn. ■ Apologies were received for the- absence of Messrs T. Morton and W. Skidmore. The headmaster reported a roll-number of 225, with an average attendance of 210.7. At the Spencerville School the roll-num-ber was 11, with an average attendance of 10. Miss Blake commenced duties as assistant-mistress on June Ist. The boxes of the Young Helpers' League wore opened, and the sum of £9 was forwarded to Dr. Barnardo's Homes. It was decided to approve of the Blble-in-Schools Bill as brought forward by Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., and to write to -the local member of Parliament urging him to support it. A slow combustion stove is to be erected in Standard IL room. The balance-sheets of the recent entertainments in the Main School showed a credit balance of £l2 15s 3d. It was decided to continue* with the socials. The Visiting Committee appointed for the ensuing month is Messrs McArthur And Lawn.
AKAROA. The annual central meeting of representatives of the Presbyterian congregations on the Peninsula was held on Thursday, the Rev. F. J. Tylee, Moderator, in the chair. Tho annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The latter showed that with respect to tho churches at Pigeon's Bay, Duvauehelle and Waiuui, there was a debit balance of £GO. Credits in sundry accounts reduced this to £4G Ss. A total of £438 had been raised for all Church purposes. Appreciative reference was made to Mr E. Hay's generosity in advancing a sum of £725, free or interest, on behalf of the new manso fund and the thank 3 of the meeting wero extended to him. It was decided that assessment remain as for last year, with the exception that Waiuui's quota bo reduced to £IS, and Robinson's Bay to £l4. Tho meeting unanimously ap proved of tho Moderator's scheino for raising funds to lift the debt on the manse. In respect to the recent resignation of Mr J. &. Dodds from the dual position of secretary and treasurer of the charge for a period of over thirty years, a minute, specially prepared by a sub-committee, was placed on record, cxpressivo of tho Church's warmest appreciation of his loyal and devoted services throughout that lengthy period. Some discussion took place on the matter of supporting the "Hospital Chaplain" fund, the Presbytery having written to ask for an increased donation. It was decided not to make any change, and to raise the money, as usual, by a special collection in the various churches in the charge. It was decided to writo to the Borough Council protesting against the increased charge for special water supply to the manse. SPRINGSTON. In the public hall, tho Methodist Sunday School Anniversary tea-meet-mg was held. In spito of the unfavourable weather thero was a ' good attendance. Tlioso who assisted at tho tables w'ejv Mosdames Parker, L. Blukemore, W. Marshall, Smithero, Mutton. Misses R. and'M. Dont, A. Quayle, E. Parker, and L. Dale.' Tho after meeting was presided ovor by Jlr W. Peiyman, Sunday school superintendent. A most enjoyable programme was given by a party from New Brighton, who, with others who had helped to make the anniversary successful, were accorded a. vote of thanks, on the motion of Mr Peryman. seconded by the Rev. J. W. Parker, Mr L. Blakemore also thanked those who had helped, especially Misses A. Taylor, and A. Quayle.
SEDGEMERE. A concert was given in tho Sedgemero Hall on Thursday night hy a party from Christohurch in aid' of the Nazareth House Building Fund. Arrangements were in the hands of Mr T. Brown, assisted by others. The following contributed items: Misses Carroll, ,M. Cater, G. Chappie, K. Chappie, E. Carney, Grace McCaw, Truman, U Costello, I> Forsyth. Messrs J. 'Darragh, Nottingham, O'Brien and J. Carroll. Supper was served after the concert and dancing took place. Additions have recently been mad© to the hall, and a great improvement has resulted.
PREBBLETON. At the residence of Mr J. Stevens, Prebbleton,. a jolly little party was held to celebrate the coming of age of Miss Maggie Carruth. The time passed pleasantly with games and musical items, while dancing was indulged in in the drawing room, which was decorated with bowls of multi-coloured chrysanthemums, and on-the-vefandah. A dainty supper was served and a beautiful Dirthday cake cut by Mibß Carruth, who was the recipient of many gifts. Mr Harry Stevens, on be* half of Miss Carruth, cordially thanked the guests for their expressions of good will and esteem. Among the guests were: —MrS A. KILLINCHY. A large number attended the last fortnightly social in the KiHinchy Hall, when prizes in a euchre tournament were won by Mrs J. Miller and Mr Alex. Allen, and consolation pmes by Miss A. Mcllraith and Mr E. Millar. A dance was held after tho tournament-. The nest social will take the form of a "hard-up, and prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. * DOYLESTON. The annual meeting of Doyleston residents for the election of a committee | of management for Osborne Park was presided over by Mr G. W. R. Osborne, chairman of the retiring committee. , The annual report stated that the decision to top the trees in the park *ajl not been carried out owing to the difficulty in obtaining labour. The Eliesmere Domain Board had assented to the committee's application for material to erect a permanent fence in front of the pavilion, and a fence had been erected at a cost of £5. The year had started with an amount of £5 10s still owing on the park seats, and there was now a debit of £lO 10s. The following officers were elected: President, Mr G. W. R. Osborne; vice-president, Mr W. 0. Rennie; secretary, Mr A- Robb; committee, Messrs G. H. Hibberd, G. MKelly, H. Smith, G. Cooke, F. W. Gurnsey J. S. Brake, G. Redmond It was decided to call tenders for topping and cording the trees i in the park and cutting back overhanging branches on the south-west side of the ground. The secretary was instructed to write to the Doyleston Athletic Club asking for a promised donation towards the cost of the park seats. It was also decided to draw the club's attention to the flooded condition of the racing track and the need for an improvement.
SOUTHBROOK. The two days' bazaar which closed on Thursday night was a great success, the amount raised being about £230. SOUTHBRTOGE. A sum of £l6 was rs.isc'l on Thursday ' night at a sale of gifts and social even- I ing in St. John's Presbyterian Church j Hall. The function was held under the auspices of the local branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Onion, and the funds will be used to assist the work of the (Jnion. The response to the appeal for gifts was (very gratifying, and good sales were made. A musical programme was contributed hy the following: Mibs Victoria Butler (pianoforte 6olo), Mesdames Eggleton and O. Gilbert, Misses Nellie Parkin, Olive Howatson, Nellie Beam&ley, Betty Eggleton (songa), Mrs Bennett, Misses Mason and Sylvia Bennett (recitations). The performers were accorded a voto of thanks.
I'" ■■■■. LEESTON. ' The Rev. J. T. Wallis, who for -■ number, of years was engaged in Methodist missionary work in the Fiji. Islands, lectured to the Leeston Wesley Guild on Thursday evening on the- scenic beauties of the islands and the progress of mission work there. The Rey- A. 0. Harris, president of the Guild, presided. The lecture was illustrated i>y lantern slides. Mr Wallis sang averse of a native hymn in the Fijian tongue, , and ftt tho end of the lecture a missionary hymn was sung. , The monthly meeting of the Leeston Town Board was held this week, tho following being present: Commissioners A. J; Gray (chairman), F. Townshend, W. Johnston, R. J McOonnfeU and b. Johnston. The tender of, Mr G. Rod- f cers was accepted for laying about, a mile of concrete'kfcrbing and Channelling at,; £7 18a Mt chain and lajrittg Hume concrete pipes at 4s 6d per f66t. The clerk reported that the time allowed builders in which to, prepare tenders for tho new Town Bonrd offices j and fixe station had been declared ' by them to be too short; It was decided to grant an extension of time ft fortnight and to hold a special meeting on June'23rd to deal with the tenders. It was reported that the work of cutting back the trees on. the property on the eastern side of Cunningham Street was being proceeded with so-that the sun could <3ry the road after rain. A suggestion wfia adopted that .the Board should prepare a statement of the cost of metalling High street with a view to application being made to the Main Highways Board for a subsidy, , The Works Committee reported that the use of the County Council's grader had been Secured to treat certain streets, instructions had been ppven conberning the location of additional street lights. Referring to the announcement that he was to leave the district in the neat 1 future, the chairman said that he hoped to be present at another meeting of the Board, and he would not tender hi& resignation until then.
SEFTON. A meeting of the Sefton Tennis Club was held in the t)omain pavilion. Mi* A. M. DaJzell presiding over a good attendance. The secretary that the recent olub tournament hrd resulted as follows:—Men's champio:; l ship cup, Mr T. D.nlzell; Indies' chan* pionship shield, Miss A. Dalzell; handicap doubles, Miss V. MASON'S FLAT. A very pleasant afternoon was spent lin the Mason's Flat Schoolroom, on Wednesday, when the scholars of the school together with their parents, friends and teachers met to farewell Mr and Mrs Morris, who are leaving the district. After afternoon tea had been dispensed, Master Walter Eincham thanked Mrs Morris for . 'her kindness to the children during the time she had been in the district, and asked Lorna Kennard to present ; her with an ebony backed brush and comb as a token of their gratitude and appreciation/ Master George Shaw then thanked Mr Morris for the energy he had shown on behalf of the school-. children and his untiring efforts fori their benefit. Angus Jury then came forward and presented Mr Morris with a pipe as a token of goodwill and expressed best wishes for his future success and happiness. Mr Morris thanked the children on behalf of Mrs lQjr.{(j and liimselfl for tlieir gifts. Whatever they had done for the children had given them much pleasure and that as chairman he had always had a good committee to work with.
