DROWNED IN SURF.
HEROIC EFFORTS AT RESCUE.
(PBE33 ASSOCIATION TEtEGEAH.) NAPIER, Juno 11. A surfboat belonging to ih© Richardson steamer Pakura iras swamped at Akitio yesterday. A second boat from the steamer rescued three of the crew, the fourth being drowned.
The was John Carney, married, with two children, of Wellington. The accident occurred a mile from the- ship and one and a half miles from the shoro.
The second mate, Henderson, who was in charge .of the swamped boat, mads heroic efforts, extending over 20 minutes, to save Carney. Three times Carney was secured but each time wa3 washed from the rescuer's grip, the man practically being drowned in Henderson's arms.
Henderson • was nearly exhausted when the rescue boat arrived, but the body of Carney had then sunk and haß not been recovered.
