ELOCUTION RECITAL.

MR NEWLANDS AT CHORAL HALL. • Mr J. C. Xcwlands, who was formerly Professor at New College, Edinburgh, and who is now giving 'elocutionary recitals throughout the British' Empire, opened a season in the Choral Hall last night, and presented a most.interesting programme. Mr.Newlands is a skilled and . experienced ■. exponent of all branches of what, is really a most difficult art and has in addition a natural faculty for the work he has undertaken. He has a well cultivated, versatile voice and an agreeable manner of delivery. His progranimo last night comprised the following items:—-"The Cratchits" Christn-as Dinner" (Charles .Pickens);.!'Mv Lost .-Youth'' (Longfellow); "The" Bells" (Edgar Allan Poc); "Laugh and Be Merry" (John Masefield); "Peter' Pan" (Sir James Barrie); "Retrospection" (Sir Alfred Lyall); "How tho Elephant Got Its Trunk" (Rudyard Kipling); "Oh.!" (Fred. Wcatherley); "Scein' Things" (Eugene Field); "The Twa Texts" (Sir James Barrie); "The Univcrsalist" (Alfred. Noycs);."The Ballad of the Bolivar" (Rudyard Kipliug); "Wha Daur Meddle Wi' Me'"' (Scottish Border Ballad). To-night there will be a'- new programme and the items will include "Old Scrooge" (Dickens), and scenes from "Romeo and Juliet," "The Heart of Midlothian,'"' and "Oliver Twist." Mr Newlands will present a Shakespeare, Scott and Dickens evening at his second recital this evening. The famous love scene from "Komeo and | Juliet" will be. included in the pro- . gramme.
