SELWYN BRIDGE.
LOCAL BODIES* ALLOCATION.
Particulars of local bodies', allocations towards the cost of erecting the proposed bridge over the Selwyn river were given yesterday to a "Press" reporter by Mr J. D. Bruce, South Island Counties' representative on the, Main Highways Board. The bridge is estimated to cost £15,000, of which amount the Main Highways Board has guaranteed £b n>4 £11,250, leaving less than £4OOO to be found by the local bodies con|erned. Of this amount £ 2850 has been promised, leaving about £1000" still to be contributed, of which the Malvern County Council's share is £SOO, and the Paparua ■•• County Council £250. The latter body have signified their intention to contribute their share. This will leave only a small'sum outstanding, and it is confidently anticipated that the full amount required will soon bo in hand, enabling the erection of the ibridgo to be commenced at an early date. ' 'As counties as far away as Akaroa, Wairewa, and Ashley have promised to contribute their proportions of the total cost of the bridge," said Mr Bruce, "it seems not too much to ask that those bodies contiguous to the district should not withhold their share." After the interview, Mr Bruce left for his; home at Akaroa, and it was subsequently learned that the Malvern County Council had dealt with the matter, its; opinion being that the bridge should be built by the Main Highways Board or by the Publilc Works Department, as it was used more for through than local traffic. The Council agreed, however, to contribute something if an effort were made to include Group 15
