PROGRESS LEAGUE.
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Canterbury Progress League last night. Present: Messrs J. H. Blackwell, J. Storry, H. Holland, M.. Stevenson, G. Shipley, H. T. Armstrong, M.P., G. H. Holford, J. E. Strachan, R. Galbraith, A. J, Magson, W. T. Lill, f2. H.' Wyles, W. Goss, G..-H. Judd, F. R. Coop, J: K.. -McAlpine, A. McKellar, R. H. Webb, JJ. G. Sullivan, M.P., W. T. Lester, G. T. Multock, H. i. Herbert, and G. Armstrong. The -chairman reierreoUto' the death of Jvir. Maasty. He said that telegrams of sympathy had been sent to _ Mrs . Massey arid to-the Government. "This League has been in close touch with-'.the' Government, although we are a non-party concern, and, we have always appreciated. the feeling and: attention given us by the late Prime Minister," he said. A telegram of thanks had been received flora Mrs Massey. A telegram, thanking the League for its congratulations, had "been received from the present Prime Minister. The treasurer, Mr W. Goss, reported that tho Post Office Savings Bank account, showed a credit balance in the No. 1 account of £135 Os 10d, and a credit balance in the No. 2 account of .'£ls9 17s 4d, a total credit balance of £591 18s 2d. i Mr Climie stated that a report he had iMended to give on Lake Coleridgo had been preceded by the published report cf the Public Works Department. He drew attention to Ihe- fact that a record peak load had occurred on Tuesd.xy between 4 and 4.30 p.m.; 14,060 k.w. .had leen used, making an overload of 2060 k.w. He had been advised by the Public Works Department that there would be no difficulty in. the coning winter months, for tho freezing workfl would bo closing down next week. "Wo can congratulate ourselves en going through this winter better than last," he concluded. Speaking of the Main Highways Board, Mr Climie said that the local bodies could not afford to raise money on tho two-thirds for one-third subsidy system. Unless legislation was amended so that a £ ■ for £ subsidy could be obtained,- the South Island could not carry on. The League should do its best to help all local.bodies to get good . roads. Mr W. T. Lill declared that tho Prime Minister was ruled by Mr Furkert as • far as the main highways were concerned. Tho theory/ of the working of the Board was absurd. - "We in Canterbury are- very dissatisfied with the one Board,'' said Mr J. K. McAlpine, who put forward a suggestion that there should be two boards. Local bodieß were not prepared to double the rates to carry out the work expected of them. The chairman considered that the question should be, dealt'with without delay. On tho motion of. Mr McAlpine it was decided to call a. conference at the'earliest opportunity, to consider the Main High- , •ways Act with a view to asking the Go- I vernment to appoint two boards.
