NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA'. The quarterly meeting of the N° rtJl Canterbury Branch of the Plunket Society was held on Tuesday. Present: Mesdames A. P. Strang (in the chair), T. Shankland, M. A. Lane, J. Stanton, W. Parsons. J.- Catherwood, E. H. "Woodfield, W.Skurr, C. Mcintosh, F. Early, R. G. .'Wolff and D. R. Blake. Mrs Horrell, of the Cust Branch, attended in support of a remit from the; branch in reference to finance. It was decided that the Rangiora Branch should have eight representatives on the N.C. Branch in future, instead ot six as at present. Mrs Strang was appointed to represent the "branch at the general conference in-. Wellington in September. The monthly meeting ot the Rangiora Branch was held yesterday afternoon, when Mrs A. P. Strang presided. The offer of Mr G. GibbsJortian, .who waited upon the committee, to arrange for a concert in aid of the funds, was accepted. The matter ol the appointment of a delegate to the general conference was deferred un td the next meeting. The weeklv meeting of St. Johns Young Men's Club was held on Tuesday night, when there was a good attendance. Dr. L. M. King gave a very instructive talk on first-aid treatment, which was much appreciated.
CHEVIOT. The local branch of the W C.T.U. met last week. Tho secretary having attended the North Canterbury District Executive meeting held in Rangiora recently, gave a short account of the "business transacted., Miss Henderson, general secretary of the W.C.T.U, for New Zealand, was -appointed representative for ■■ Cheviot on - the National Council of Women in Christchurch.
At a social evening.held in the Domett Hall a presentation was made to Mr S. Denton on the occasion of Ms marriage. Mr H. Taylor, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr Denton with a suitcase aiid wished him all happiness in the future. A Commission from the Christchureh Presbytery visited the Cheviot charge recently.. The Commission consisted of the Rev. Newlands, of ,Waia.u, and Rev. Gemmell, of. Hamner, and they were accompanied by the Rev. Crockett, of Waikari, Moderator of the Cheviot charge. The Commission met the Management Committee, and'in the.evening a general meeting of the congregation was held in the Presbyterian Hall, when short addresses were given by the members of the Commission. Duririg the evening musical items were given by the choir and solos by Mrs Fraser, Miss McLauchlan, and the Rev. E. tSwinerd. At the conclusion of the meeting supper was handed round.' Playing in the Hurunui Sub-Union ■competitions on. Saturday last,, the Cheviot juniors defeated Culverden by 39 .points to ; 3; .In the senior matcli Cheviot defeated Culverden -by 0 points to 3. The competition will be continued on Saturday, •when Kaikoura will visit Cheviot. '..'.-'

Wotherspoon. «' The Town Hall sub-committee reported that the estimated cost of a town hall in reinforced concrete was £2OOO, and with furnishings and- other accessories it would be, '£2400. It recommended that the building of a hall be not proceeded.with until two-thirds of the total cost -was raised. In regard to site, it had given its-consideration to what was known as the County Council section, and the terms on whicli this' could be secured had been furnished. In order to ascertain to what extent the public would support the erection of a town hall, the committee recommended a personal canvas by the respective queen committees. It was decided that a hall be built when an adequate amount was raised. ' .
ASHLEY BANK. ■ a large attendance at the fortnightly' progressive euchre tournament held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening, fifteen tables being used. The prizes, which were presented by Mr J. Petrie and Mr C. Downing were won by Miss Steel and Mr Lundy. At the last euchre, tournament it was decided after a show of hands, that two points be given for each game won, and one point for each drawn game. Wieather conditions have been very unsettled this week'. On Monday, heavy ■•rain fell in showers throughout the day, but by night, had turned into a. heavy drizzle. Tuesday was a fine day, but early'in.the evening a. heavy fog came down, and heavy rain fell throughout the night and during yesterday. Rain is not needed>just at present, and the soil will be too wet to work for some time.
SOUTHBROOK. A bazaar in' aid of'-the Hall Fund was opened yesterday by the Hon. D. Buddo, M.P. 'Mr N..B. : Archer, chair- . man of the committee, in introducing Mr Buddo, said the committee had recognised for some time the need of a more comfortable hall, and they hoped by this effort to raise sufficient money to carry" out improvements. In declaring ,the bazaar open, Mr Buddo said it. gave him great pleasure to do so,-as it showed that something was being done by the. committee to .cater for the social life of the district. Look- ' ing round the hall at the splendid dis« play of cakes, s.weets, vegetables and produce, he could see that a great amount of work had been done by the ladies, and he commended the .effort to all present, and the purpose for' which it was-held.-' There was a large attendance during the' afternoon, and very good business .was done. • Last ■ nigiit the proceedings were enlivened by a number'of musical items by the Rangiora Brass Baud, and items by the llangiora. SPENCERVILLE. The Spencerville Social Committee met on Tuesday night. Present: Mr w . P. Spencer (chairman), Mrs W. P. Spencer, Miss A. "Wells and Messrs G. Veils and G. Kyle. Mr AY. Bates waa_. appointed a member of the committee. It was resolved to hold a progressive euchre match to raise funds to purchase a gramophone for the school. n ?: R.-'-Dunlop,. secretary of the Uunzhia Social' Committee, wrote inVitang the Spencerville- Residents to play a friendly euchre match at OuriN ma on June 19th. It wa,s decided to accept the challenge. -
OKAIN'S BAY. The Loyal Hand of Friendship held its fortnightly meeting last week. Bro. J. Harris, X.G., presided, Correspondence was read from three Brothers, claiming sick pay, amounting to £23 15s, which was passed for payment. Hie balance-sheets of the first two euchre tournaments • were read antf adopted. The following officers were nominated: T.P.N.G., Bro. J. Harris, -VG.; for N.G., Sis. Rita, Mason, V,G. : for V.G.. Bro.' V. Mason; for KS., Bro. F. Mason; for Guardian, Bro. C. Priest. Each member was invited to give an opinion as to the best means of celebrating, the Lodgo Jubilee, and it was decided to hold a dinner to members of the- Order, to be followed by a ball, a special invitation to be issued to the pioneer members and their wives. It was noted that only four survive of those who joined in 18"o, one member, P.G. S. A. Harris, being present at the meeting. At the fortnightly meeting of the at. John's Ladies' Guild there were present: Mrs J. Bolevn (president), Mrs T, G. Ware, Mrs S. H. Thomas, Miss A. Ware, Mrs Silas Harris, Miss Mary Moore, Mrs H. Muir. Miss Lizzie* Moore, Mrs Arnold Ware. A letter from the matron of the St. Saviour's Babies' Home at Sumner was received, thanking the Guild for the large hanv per of clothes that had been sent in. She mentioned that with the large number of babies in the Home, such a gift *was very acceptable and useful. Afternoon tea was provided by two of tho. members.
The many friends of Mrs A. E. Harris will be pleased to learn that she is making good progress towards recovery. .She is now able to get about in a wheeled chair. She is now convalescing, and hopes to be out of hospital in the near future. Miss Ivy Chapman (Stratford) is the ! guest of her aunt, Mrs J, R. Thackoi\ Mr and Mrs P. Cumming are away on holiday. . MrH. D. Muir has returned from a visit to Christchureh. The Rev. P. H. Thorpe, has returned after a holiday in the south. The, asnmial prize-giving of St.'-, John's Sunday School was held in the hall. There was a large gathering of residents present, and a. delightful evening was spent. In the absence of the Rev. F. H. Thorpe, Mr W. Thomas presented the prizes,- whicli are given each year by Mr W. Thacker (Christchurch), . formerly of Okain's Bay. In a few well-chosen words lie eulogised the work "of the Sunday School teachers, Miss Lorna Harris (Superintendent), Miss Lizzie Moore and Mr Walter Harris, jun'. •■ Those receiving special, prizes were: Nancy Moore, June Muir, Patricia Muir, Jean' Harris.
