CHARGES OF BOOKMAKING.
ACCUSED TO BE TRIED BY JURY. (rSGSS ASSOCIATION TBLEOBAMS.) GISBORNE, June 10. At the Tokomaru Bay Magistrate's Court, before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M., charges of bookmaking and loitering for purposes of betting were preferred against Charles Croon and Arthur Owen. It js alleged that accused took up a stand outside the Ruatorea Racecourse, during a race meeting jn February last, occupying a motor-car, which was visited by. a large number of persons. Several police officials gave evidence that they saw a stream of people going backwards and forwards from the cou/se to the road, presumably to bet with accused. • Sergeant Carroll said he saw an official of the club pass a roll of notes to Owen. Witness interfered, and made Owen refund the money. Constable Walden said that Croon, when approached, said the police could not touch them, as they were not on the public road, and not laying odds. Two witnesses gave evidence of making bets with accused. Accused stated they would be tried by; a jury on the major which was agreed to, the decision on the minor count to be deferred pending a settlement of the Supreme Couit action. Accused were committed for trial. Bail was allowed of £IOO each.
