Nominations for the race meeting to bo held at Motukarara on Saturday, Juno 20th, by the Banks Peninsula Racing Club in conjunction with the Brackenfield Hunt Club, close at 5.30 p.m. to-day. There are fire galloping events and two trotting events on the card, with a total of 855 sovs in stakes. /• Acceptances for the Waimato Trotting: Club's Inaugural Meeting are due to-morrow. The Canterbury Jockey Club. Auckland Racing Club. Dunedin Jorkey Club, Avondale Jockey Club, Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, Manawatu Racing Club, Wanganui Jockey Club, Taranaki Jockey Club, and Takapuna Jockey Club will take nominations for their classic events on Friday. Nominations for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting and the Hawke's Bay Hunt Winter Meeting close on Friday. Mr E. Riddiford lias engaged E. A. Keesing to ride his horses on the flat nest season in place of R. Reed. Olympic, a winner at Levin on Saturday, is a half-brother by Polydamon to Many Colours. Red "Wink is giving his trainer some trouble, but the exact nature of his ailment has not yet been fathomed. Gloaming will be 6ent to Sydney when the TJlimaroa makes her nest trip, a fortnight hence. F. Davis will again take over Mr T. H. Lowry's horses shortly. Nigger Minstrel will be ono of the team. Tho pacing gelding, Wallroon. has been sold, and in future will be trained at Auckland by W. Kelsey. At a meeting of the committee of the Southland Racing Club held recently, a loss of £lO2 3s 9d over the Autumn Meeting at Inrercargill was reported. The Limond—Medley and Boniform— Majebtikoff geldings owned by Mr H. A. Knight are at present sheltered in F. Christmas/s stable at Riccarton. Darknite is now sheltered in A. Fleming's stable pending J. Shaw's return from Auckland with Peter Dean and Florrie Bingen, Mrs M. A. Perry has leased Crishna and Tiega from Mr J. 8. McLeod. Both are likely to remain under W. In the trotting pages the light-harness enthusiasts will find a "wealth of information concerning the trotting at Hawke's Bay, South Wairairapa, and tho Canterbury Park Meeting?., Searchlight, in Things Seen, tells of many happenings in the" sport, while all will read "with interest tho opinions expressed by Miles on incidents at Addington and on matters of vital interest to trotting enthusiasts. ; The Ashburton Trotting Club's Winter Meeting, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, is the last trotting fixture of the season, and it is being looked forward to with very keen interest. It is a goad many years since this popular club held a two days' moeiing, and the programme issued has attracted such goo.d fields that, given fine weather, a very successful meeting, with highclass racing, may bo expected. Apart from the handicap evonta, two special attractions. of t,he meeting will bo tho New Zealand Sapling Stakes, for two-year-olds, on tho first day, and tho Free-for-All on the second day. Tho Sapling Stakes is the only .two-year-old classic event in tho - trotting calendar, and there is the promise of a very good field for the race to be run on Friday, while the Free-for-AU on Saturday, with Acron, Onyx, Logan Chief, Man o.' War, Sheik, Ahuriri,.and Realm engaged, should produce a thrilling content. Very complete train arrangements have been made to suit the convenience of trainers as -well as the public. A special horse train will leave ChristchuTch' at 6.30 a.m. on Friday, and special passenger trains will leave at 9 a.m. and 9.20. a.m. each day. Tho first race "will start at 11.15 a.m.
DEATH OF P. KEENE. (sriCIAL TO "THE r-BESS.") DUNEDIN, June 9. Percy Kcene, tho jockey who was injured at "Wingatui on Thursday last, when Captain Sarto fell in the Otaso Hurdle Handicap, died in hospital to-day. He was nineteen years of age and was employed by J!. Alexander, of Sockburn, with whom he Berved h)3 apprenticeship. An inquest was formally onencd this afternoon, and adjourned. [Percy Kcene was vc'v popular amongst racing people at Riccarton, and was a clean-living and energetic lad, whose services will bo 'greatly missed. Ever willing to school horses, experienced cr otherwise, ho rode a. good dfal of work at headquarters, and after increasing weight had caused him to tako lap riding ovp-.- fences, his ability on jumpers was quickly recognised. He bad won eight races during tlie past few months, most of tiiem over hurdles, and hi? Ecrvices were much in demand at meetings in the South Is and.
