Four Government gunboats appeared around Hc-Nnn Island, opposite Canton, and opened fire directly on the F.uud with full force. The mutinous Yunnanese troops answered with heavy fire from the shore.

The gunboats passed "Dutch Folly" Island, and then turned and came back, pouring a heavy fire from machine-guns and small cannon. They then disappeared around Ho-Nan. It is impossible to estimato the damago now, as the troops still have complete possession of the Bund. Ho-Nan Island was in complete darkness last night. Tho Yunnanese have probably severed all connexions crossing the river.

Eille fire from both sides of tho river continued almost incessantly for 40 hours.

(Received June 9th, 9.15 p.m.) PEKING, June 8. Two Japanese destroyers arrived at Canton j'esterday afternoon. Thero was a short lull in the firing last night while heavy rain fell. Three thousand Cantonese, under Lenng-Hung-Kui, arrived last night from Fatshan and are now at Shek-Wai-Tong station across the river. The foreigners have evacuated Tungshan.

A meeting at Shanghai of various Chinese commercial and students' unions passed resolutions which were handed to the Chinese delegates. They include four demands which tho strikers consider essential preliminaries to official negotiations: Firstly, tho cancellation of the State emergency. Secondly, the withdrawal of foreign marines. Thirdly, tho release of arrested rioters. Fourthly, the restoration of closed schools. «, The" resolution reveals wide aspirations, including tho early cancellation of extra-territoriality. It is asked that tho Foreign Ministers meanwhile apologise to tho Government and guarantee that no further similar action shall occur.
