VISIT TO SOUTH ISLAND.
, Their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Alice Fergusson, nccompanici" by Miss Fergusson and Miss OiT-Ewing, passed through Oliristcliurch yesterday on their way to Dunedin. Tliey will return to Christchurch on Fridav. On their arrival at Lyttelton by the ferry steamer Wahine early yesterday morning, their Excellencies were met and welcomed hv the Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr F. rf. fcjiutton. The Town Clerk (Mr F. Hobbs) was also present.
Mr Sutton said he wished to wolcome to Lvt telton, the port of Canterbury, Sir Charles and Lady Alice Forjrusson. He wished to apologise for the absence of councillors, but he had only bcom informed of the arrival of their Excellencies at 11 o'clock tho previous night, and it was then too lato to communicate with them, otherwise the gathering would have been more representative.
Tho proceedings then took the form of an informal chat, Sir Charles and Lady Alice Fergusson both remarking that they would Hko to spend a morning or a dav in Lyttolton at somo time. In conclusion the "Governor-General thanked tho Mayor and Town Clerk for being prosent to welcome them at so early an hour.
ARRIVAL IN DUNEDIN. (FEESS ASSOCIATION aXLEPBAM.) DUNEDIN, Juno.9. The Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson, Miss Fergusson, and Miss Orr-Ewing arrived in Duncdin by the through express train this afternoon, and were welcomed by the Mayor, councillors, and representatives of public bodies. The Highland Pipe Band played tho Vice-Regal party through crowded streets, to the Grand Hotel. The Governor-General was accorded a civic reception at the Art Gallery Hall in the evening. An address of welcome was presented by the Mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley. A largo and representative gathering of citizens was present. Later in the evening the ViceRegal party visited the Returned Soldiers ' Club, and were welcomed by a large crowd. Subsequently they inspected the building. To-morrow morning tho visitors will inspect the Exhibition buildings, foi 16wed by a visit to the Otago University and Medical School in King street. In the afternoon a visit will be paid to the Red Cross Hospital at Montecillo, and the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides will be inspected on the ground at Montecillo. His Excellency will be tho guest of members of tho Fernhill Club at dinner in the evening. Members of the Otago "Women's Club will tender an "at home.!' to her Excellency and Miss Fergusson at 8 p.m.
MrH. Blakeley, hon. secretary of the Christchurch Male Voice Choir, has received intimation from the private secretary of the Governor-General,. Sir Charles Fergusson, that their Esfceilencies are pleased to accept the position of patrdns to the Society. '
