Cow) at tho Courthouse yesterday. Senior-Sergeant D. Jackson conducted tho case for the police. Robert Samuel Stock, husband of the deceased, said that his wife was taken to,tho Hospital for tho purpose, of an operation. She had been delicate for somo time, and an operation was necessary. , Dr. W. J. Mullin said he attended deceased on Monday" at tho • Oakhurst Private Hospital, and administered the aneetfhitic. He carofully examined the heart before doing so, and found nothing abnormal. He commenced the •administration by using a. mixture of two drams of chloroform and six of ether, which the deceased took well. He then kept her under with pure ether. He noticed that she seemed to go more deeply under than ho should have expected from the amount of ether given her; About an hour after tho commencement of the anaesthetic her breathing bocamc slow, and then stopped. Witness called Dr. Fisher's attention to the fact, and artificial respiration was commenced. The heart was still beating, but stopped after about ten minutes. Tho respiration was kept up for somo timo, and the heart massaged. Ether and strychnine had been injected when the beating first stopped. He considered that death was due, to ether paralysing the breathing centre in tho medulla, or what might be called the lower brain. Witness thought that the patient must have had an idiosyncrasy,' making her unusually sensitive to the action of ether.
Dr. G. J. S. Fisher said he operated on the late Mrs Stock for a pelvic tumour. '.Ho thoroughly examined her previously, and\in spite of a chronic cough, he considered her a fit subject for anresthc'sia. At the same time he realised that it was going to bo a difficult anaesthesia, and he made a special request to Dr. Mullin to administer the anrasthetic. When the operation was completed, witness's attention ..was drawn by Dr. Mullin to the fact that the patient had stopped breathing. The steps as described by the previous wilj ness were then taken. He and T>>.\ Mullin made a post-mortem examination of the body, and he agreed with the previous witness as to the cause of death. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence.
