NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. Tbo first meeting of the year of the Rangiora United Band of Hope was held in the Oddfellows' Hall. A programme of vocal items was given, and an address delivered by the president. At a meeting held previously, the committee for the year was chosen as follows:—President, Mr W. Lewis; vice-presidents, Rev?. W. R. Hutchison (Presbyterian), C. Blair (Methodist), W. H. A. Viekery, and Mr E. L. Breach (Baptist), Ensign Whittey (Salvation Army), and Mrs H. Taylor (W.C.T.U.): secretary, Mr C. D. Gibson; assistant-secretary, Mrs McKechnie; treasurer, Miss Nelmes. The anniversary services of the Methodist Church were held on Sunday. The special appeal made was very liberally responded to. The preacher at the morning and afternoon services was the Uev. W. Hay, of Christchurch, while the evening servico.was conducted by the Rev. J. Guy, who was formerly in .charge of the circuit. The choir, under Mr R. Simpson, contributed a number of anthems. Special interest was taken in the afternoon service, when the Rev. W. Hay gave two solos. Mr A. Lane presided at the organ.
HANMER SPRINGS. The cricketers wore favoured with a clear moonlit night and frosty conditions for their dance on Friday, and a pleasant evening was spent by the many who attended. The hall was prettily decorated with greenery and reflected credit on Miss E. Hodges and other friends and supporters of the club who assisted. A. lucky spot waltz was won by Miss McMillan and Mr Jackson. Misses Brown and Eraser played extras. It is understood that the planting programme of the Station Forest Senvice for this season has been, extended, and it is hoped, to deal with an area about double what was oriEinally intended. This will add 1500 acres to the Hanmer and 2000 acres to the Balmoral plantations. It is expected ihat there will be employment for about 100 men. ' The Golf Club's monthly medal match was played at the week-end. 'The'four best cards handed in were: Mrs Reid, 96-28-08; W. G. Morrison; 86-14-72; A. Reid, 76-2-74; E. Carter, 91-l'sw6.' The snowfall in the back country during the early part of'last week is reported to have varied from 12 inches up the Clarence Raver,' about St. James's homestead, to seven inches and. less down the river. Unless the snow lies it is not anticipated that stock will come to any great harm. So far it has been followed by hard frosts, three of which were in the vicinity of 17 degrees. Sunday was a mild.day with a slight ;'thaw on the suirrounding hills. Progress, of a noticeable nature .ia being made in the erection, of the women's hospital building... The roofing in of the west wing is now nearing ■completion. in readiness for the tilelayers. Another fire days of suitable weather will see the finishing of the concrete work. All trades are now at work on. the building. On Saturday the football"team played Waikari on the latter's ground and won comfortably by 11 points to 3. Young scored two tries, Woods converting the'second. Carson scored one try. Waikari's score was a penalty goal. Mr Robertson was referee. WAIKARI. An enthusiastic meeting was held on Friday last for. tho purpose of forming a Golf Club in Waikari. Mr B. Blunden presided over a good attendance of those interested. It was decided ,to commence, play as soon as possible. Miss Mon'a Mcßae and Mr H. Bruce were deputed to arrange for, the planning'of the links and the coaching of members desiring tuition. The names of a number of intending players were submitted, and a hope was expressed that all ■• residents of the district interested in golf would become members. Mr W. W. Mcßae was unanimously elected president, and Mr C. V. Jackman secretary.
WAIPARA. Last Friday night the local hall, which was beautifully decorated, was filled to overflowing, the occasion being a concert and dance in aid of the Waipara Branch of the PlunketSociety. Mr Angus Cameron. acted as chairman and explained the objects of the concert. During the evening musical items were given by Mrs Shier (Amberley), Mesdames E. Foster (Omihi), O. Johnston (Scargill), Stratton (Amberlev), Shadbolt and Jones (Waipara), L. Doak (Omihi), Misses Chamberlain (Amberlev), Laskey (Omihi), M. Cameron, M. Whyte and D. Blyth i Waipara), Messrs O. Johnston (Scargill), Burke (Amberley), Shier (Amberley) Stratten (Amberlev), B. O. Duncan, Green and Ritchie. At the conclusion of the concert Mrs Acton Adams (Tipapa), president,of the Waipara County Branch of the Plunket Society, thanked all present for their attendance and kindly interest and assistance. A sumptuous supper was' then served and dancing indulged in till the early hours of the morning. Mr Middleton (Rangiora) supplied the dance music and Mr F. Laredo acted as M.O. A word of praise is due to Mrs A. Cameron, .who organised the concert, and to Mrs Norman Davies, who made a most energetio secretary. The following residents have been gazetted as members of the local Domain Board: —Angus Cameron, Leslie Robert King, William John McGuckin, Thomas Walker, and James Guild Whyte. On Saturday the Glenmark junior football team journeyed to Woodend and played.a match against the juniors there, the former winning by 11 points tp eight.
AMBERLEY. On Saturday evening the second scries of card matches in connexion with "the challenge cup presented to Friendly Societies by Dr. Thompson was played by teams representing the Ambcrley Druids and the Amberley Oddfellows' Lodges. The results of the scores were not announced, as they are to b© totallj-d on the evening of the final match. The mombers of the Amberley Athletic and Cycling Club took the opportunity of fnrewelling their club captain. Mr A. Rowney, on Saturday evening, when tho president, Mr JHendrcn, presided over a good attendance. Mr Hendreri, in making a- Presentation of a Kaiapoi nig-to Mr Rowney, referred to his hard work and organising abilities in assisting to establish the club. - The recipient briefly responded 1 . At the last meeting of the Amberley .Town Board- there were presentMessrs W. Bovce (chairman), J. -McDonald. W. H. Hale, J. A. Shaw J. W. Osborn, "\V. Thompson, and v\. Redmavne. Correspondence was received "from tho Health Inspector relating to improvements required to two dwellings, also to the building ot a public convenience. The latter was held over, also the request of the Public Trustee with regard to partially letting a dwelling which the Health- Inspector is having repaired. The Rowai County Council wrote stating that the work of cleaning the creek at Hadler's corner would be proceeded with at onco. They also wrote thanking the Board for bringing under their notice the urgent need for the. lighting by electricity of the railway station at Amberlev, and would support the resolution, of the Board sent forward to the 'Minister for Railways. • The certified balance-sheet was received from tne Auditor-General for the past year, In© matter of sanitary by-laws was deterred foe a future meeting. The clerfc. was instructed to write to the Highways Board making an application tor a subsidy towards the maintenance ma upkeep of the Main North road, which runs through the'town district. It was decided to ma"Be an application to the Valuation Department for a revaluation of the town district. Notice of motion was given to make and levy a general rate of l*d in the £. Ihe Board's teamster and dayman having resigned, Mr H. Y. Kidd was appointed to the position. It was resolved that a shed be built in the Domain to house the grass mower. The clerk was instructed to order 500 pmus insignia trees for planting -m the Domain. Mr Hale undertook to see. to the erection 'of the fence on th western boundary. It was decided to call tenders for. the topping of tiie re-, maindor of the trees along Douglas road. SEFTON. Arrangements have been completed for the delivery of letters and papers ,to residents .'of outlying.:..districts, by means of a rural-mail; which.is being run by Messrs D. Miller and Co., of Seftoii. Yesterday's mail was the first to be delivered in this manner. After a pleasant spell of sunny days a sou'-wester made its arrival felt yesterday in the. cold rain which fell all day. Unfortunately, the land has already had. enough rain, and could do with a considerable period of dry weather. • OHOKA. The anniversary tea and concert of the Ohoka Methodist Church was more than usually successful. After tho children had done justice to 'the good things'provided, a concert party from Kaiapoi catered for the musical- sense of the elders. At tho Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, the Rev. F. J. Tylee, minister in charge, read an acknowledgment from Mrs Massey,' of the letter of sympathy and condolence forwarded on behalf of the Presbyterians on Banks Peninsula. Mrs Massey referred in-grateful - and : appreciative terms to'the very: warm tributes to her late husband that had come from tho various : church congregations throughout the Dominion. . • '. Much indignation is expressed at the fact that a number of dogs have been poisoned recently round about Akaroa 'and Takamatua. One report states that so far,twelve dogs have been accounted for. Enquiries are being made, farmers hoping meanwhile that the police will soon be able to lay hands on the offender. OKAIN'S BAY. Owing to the inclement weather, the presentation of prizes to St. John's Sunday School scholars has been postponed to 'a later date. . Mr and Mrs D. Turner left the district last week for the North Island, where they intend to make their futuro home. Mrs T. Hawes and Mrs W. Hawes have returned from a visit to .Mr J. Hawes (Prebblcton). . Mr and Mrs Archie "Ware are spending a few days in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Arnold Ware have returned from a holiday in Christchurch. TAI TAPU. The 57th anniversary of the , Tai Tapu. Methodist Church was celebrated by a tea and sacred concert. The Rev. T. J. Wallis presided over a large gathering, and read apologies for absence from the Revs. Parker,. Wilson, and Robertson. A very fine programme of organ solos, vocal solos and duets was provided by a party from Christchurqh, including Mr and Mrs E. Firth, Miss Twose and Mr Blakeley. The secretary (Mr H. E. Peryman) and treasurer (Mr T. 0. Morgan) read their -.reports which were very satisfactory. The latter stated that since 1919 the sum of over £2700 had been contributed by the congregation. Votes of thanks were accorded v all who had helped in 'church work during the year, and also those who had helped in making the anniversary so successful. A. football match took" place in Rhodes' Park on Saturday afternoon between Southbridge Juniors and Waihora. The latter won by 4 points to 3. Mr G. Wheeler acted as referee.
WADDINGTON. A favourable report of tho previous mooting was read. Officers for the ensuing voar were elected as follows:—Mrs E.' A. Hawke occupied the chair, other speakers being the Kevs. Bates and Boothrovd. Items were contributed by Mrs f. S. Innoss, a « D - Adams, Mr Hicks-Ussher, and Master Alan Sealev. The function to be held in the Memorial Hall to celebrate the turning on of the electric light in the town promises to be a success in every way. A most gratifying report was handed in to the committee on Saturday by Mr i, J C Naroev and Mr Geo. Warren, who have been canvassing for subscriptions from the residents and they say that tho response has been both generous and spontaneous. A large number of prominent residents have promised to he present, and as first-class music and ain elaborate supper are assured, it only requires the presenco of the residents to make this e«vent tho most successful and memorable in tho Tiistory of this town. WEST MELTON. At the Miniature Eifle Club's weeklyshoot the Tisdall Button was again won by W. Oakley, jun., with a possible. Tho winners of the prizeß on the last two nights have been Mesdames Masters and Sloss, and Messrs Forbes and A. Wyllie. SPRINGFIELD. The weather at the beginning of last week was very wet, and a considerable ampunt of snow -fell on the mountains. The latter part was frosty at'night; followedkby fine'days. At, the last euchre tournament "it was decided to do- away with tion prizes, and award first; and second prizes. The awards we're: Lajlies, Miss L. Smith 1-, Mrs*"Woodford 2; gentlemen: Mr F. Joines I', and Mr J. Doody 2. . The Springfield hockey team visited Darfield, on Saturday, Springfield winning by .6 goals to 1. ■The footballers played Kirwee at the Springfield Domain* the local team winning hy 16 points to' 3. The Annat school children journeyed to Springfield on Friday to play games of hockey and football, with the children of the school. The Annat players were victorious in both games. WEEDONS. At; the fortnightly meeting ' of ' th c Wesley "Guild papers were., given . by members, the. subject being.on '.'Lives of Great Men and Women." Tho attendance was'excellent. ; ' ""■*■•»' , Mr P. F. Ryan is in receipt of a communication . from the- Acting-District Traffic Manager to the.effect that the request of the deputation—Messrs G. Witty, M.P., and Mr Ryan—which waited on him recently in regard to the installation of a telephone at the Weedons flag station for railway busi-, ncss only had been compiled with, and that tho telephone would connect, with the Christchurch-Kolleston circuit. This is a new departure on the part of the Railway' . Department, and if - the facility ia extended to > other districts similarly situated to Weedons it will be a great convenience to,farmers and very much facilitate, the operations of the Department in regard to providing trucks and transit generally. . HORNBY-ISLINGTON. The Sockburn branch of St. David's Presbyterian Church, Hornby, held its annual tea and concert on Saturday evening. The hall was tastefully decorated with orange, green, and cream streamers, and the tables were ornamented with flowers. Tea was served from 5 p.m. until 7.30 p.m., to a very large gathering, those in charge of the tables being Mesdamss Newmjan, Timms, Brown (2), Eaton, Smyth©,' and Green, Misses Henderson, Newman and Timms, Messrs Roberts, Eaton,. Busch and Green. The concert which followed was of a popular nature, and was' by 'far the ibest yet given, in the district by this organisation., The following contributed items Miss Pearc© (Christohurch), Mr Woodward, Master Pearce, Miss C. Tovey, Mr Newman, Miss B. Voice and Master Pearce • (duet); musical items, Mr Woodward and party, Mr Maddens; recitations, Misses C. Tovey, R. Pearce, J. Pooley (Islington), Master Pearce; fancy dances. Misses J. Shunton (Riccarton, M. Johnston (Spreydon), D. Timms; club swinging, Miss Hanson; conjuring trickr, Mr Hutton. The pianists were Misses E. Shoaps (West Coast), B. Voice (Riccarton), R. Pearce, and Mr Johnston (Spreydon). During the evening "the Rev. J. S. Reid addressed the children and distributed the Sunday School prizes. At the conclusion of the programme Mr Beid accorded a hearty vote of thanks to th© performers and the various workers who, by their -united efforts, had made 'the function such a brilliant success. Mr Eaton moved a vote of thanks to Mr Roberts and his assistants, Misses Henderson and Newman, arid Mr W. Bmsch, .for their untiring efforts on behalf of th© Sunday School since its inception five years ago. A concert held in aid of the funds of the Islington school was well attended. Items were given as follows: Songs, Misa Johnston, Messrs Allott and Pritchard; pianoforte duet, MrsMcTeigue land fMiss CeSalter; violin solo, Miss ' J. part of the programme was given by a. party from Christchurch, songs being given by Messrs N. Down, D. Wilson, and' Lawrence; fancy dances by Miss Irvine and Mr Irvine, and pipe selections by Mr A. White. KIRWEE. Mr W. W. M-ulhoUand, a member of the Malvern Electric Power Board, attended the Kirwee Sale on Friday for the purpose of explaining various matters, in connexion with the installation of the electric light and power in the district. Mr MulhoUand was, accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the. information he had given. It has been decided to make a canvass to find out what revenue will he forthcoming and to make an effort to get the current as soon zb possible. The first of a series of euchre matches and dances took place in the Agricultural Hall on Friday evening. There was a large number of people present and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The prize-winners were: Ladies: Mrs S. Dunn Ist and Mrs W. J. Whyte 2nd; gentlemen's: Mr H. Fo.v ter Ist and Mr W. J. Wnyie 2nd. Supper was. provided by the ladies.
