, HOCKEY. (sneuv to "the raEss.") GREYMOUTH, June 7. In a ladies' hockey match played at Greymouth yesterday Mawhera defeated Blacks Points by three goals to nil. Magistrate's Court. A Granity resident, who appeared before Mr IL P. Lawry, S.M., was fined £2 and costs for the theft of two fowls from McNarn's Hotel. Bell Hill Road. Mr J. O'Brien, M.P., has received tho following letter from the Minister of Public Works: "I now desire to inform you that it would appear from the report which has been submitted to me that the completion of the KotiikuBell Hill road is- not a particularly urgent matter, and 1 regret that I cannot see my way to authorise the whole of the item of £.IOOO for expenditure immediately. I am, however, having an authority f Cr £;300 issued to the Resident Engineer, who will have operations commenced at an early date." Kumara School. - Members of the Kumara School Committee protested against the approval of the site selected for the new school, and a conference was held with Mr H. .7. Bignell, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board. A satisfactory settlement was arrived at, and tho school will be commenced to-morrow. Casualty. Michael Ryan, a waterside worker, slipped, and dislocated his shoulder when working at railway goodsheds. Reefton Electric Company. At a meeting of directors, the Reefton Electric Light Company declared a dividend of one penny per share on all its issue. This is the second dividend to be declared, in the past twelve months. Inangahua Junction Bridge. The temporary bridge at Inangahua Junction will bo opened for traffic- tomorrow. Rainfall. For the month of May the', rainfall at Reefton was 4.33 inches, there being eleven days with rain. Personal. Mr I C. W. Carver, of Hokitika, who has been appointed Clerk of tho Court at Greymouth, will,commence duties on Monday. Mr R. Duggan, of the Courthouse, Hokitika, has received notice of transfer to Greymouth, and will commence his new duties on' June 15th. The Hon. W. H. . Mclntyre, M.L.C., left for Auckland yesterday. Mr E. J. Cleghorn,. late of the railway goodshed staff, left on Saturday for Addington on transfer. ' Mr J. Young lias resigned from the Railway Department, and leaves on Thursday for Christchurch, where he will in future reside. Messrs C. Lamont and CI Jackson, of Greymouth, will leave during tho Week for Australia,. Mr J. Chapplehow has resigned from the Defenco Office, Westport. A Lodge of Sorrow in memory of the late Prime Minister Avas held this afternoon at Burns '. Hall,' Reefton. Mr A. W. Whittlcstone, who has been appointed manager of the Brunner .Collieries, Ltd., .will commence duty on July Ist, ' Wedding. The marriage was solemnised at tho Blackball Presbyterian Church of Miss M. Lambertcn f "eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs.T. Lambertou, to Mi- A. McNieol, eldest, son of Mr and Mrs J. McNicol. After the ceremony the happy couple, left for •Hokitika, where the honeymoon will be spent.
Deportation. At a largely-attendod meeting of the 1 Blackball Miners' Union held this mornj ing the secretary was insttueted to ! telegraph to the Minister of Internal Affairs a strongly-worded resolution of protest against tho deportation of Lyons. I Miners' Union. j The election of officers for the "West Coast Miners' Union resulted in the return of the following, unopposed:— President, Mr T..W. "Whittle; secretary, Mr W-. Balderstonc; treasurer, Mr L\ Hay.wardi ' Medical Officer Appointed; At a meeting of the.Runanga branch of.'the Statq Collieries Medical Association, Dr. .0. "WV Meade, of Wcstport, was appointed- medical officer from 14 applicants. The Ecwanui branch will vote on the appointment on Monday cvening, but the result will be unalterecL Dr. Meade formerly practised at Runanga for 1 a period of nine yoars and has been at "Wcstport' for about two years. " Golf. A ladies' medal match, played at Oruoto yesterday, resulted in the following securing the scoros:—Miss Griffon,, 104, 22, 82; Miss Moldrum, 98, 15, 83; Miss Kettle, 103, 20, 83. A men's medal handicap resulted: — Shallcrass, 81, 8, 73; Dcnnchy, 96, 23, 73, .' Billiard Saloons Raided. A "Wcstport .message says that the police raided two billiard saloons, and arrested the men in possession on a charge of keeping a common gaminghouse. Three men found on the premises were also, arrcstQd, and remanded till Friday on bail.
