Notas on tho Kadflf . Paddy's Hope again gave trouble whan the field lined no for the Coleridge Httrdles, from which Grim Joke was the only withdrawal. Paddy's Hope screwed round ae the barrier went np and was hopelessly left.

The heavy going evidonty »nade a big difference in the form of several of the runners, and after going two furlongs the first day's wmncr, Lord Ashlea, dropped out of the running, to finish a bad last. On the other hand Calibration, who, after being with the pidcrs.for a w hil<> on the opening day, lost his position, on this occasion was always well "P- Royal Star jumped better than on the met. day, but, did not aepcar to like the business. Rod Kriss, like Royal Star, d."d n <>t put much .. heart into his wori, and though finishing third, will need to have a 1-t in his favour if he is to boat a f>ld of fair-horses. Captain Sarto was in the picture- at one stage, ar:l will be a 500-d proposition after another race or two.

With Gold Brick and Some Abbey r.ot in the May -Stakes, foltoe, who had . finished third to them en the first day. was backed as the best, cf pood things, with Passing Hour tie only oiher rumor serious'y considered. Tlie" start appeared to bo a straggling one, but this was due io the many preen runners in the P«\d jumping cut in different direction*. His mount is a big, heavy-headed horsi?, mid thouaili the punishment on tho fac>> of it seenied warranted, 'all tho blame was not attachable ;to the horse's rider. -The withdrawal or Gay Juliet, Sun Up, and Ayrburn. left only {our runners for tbe Parcor'a Ha-ndicap. Los Ambus was made favourite- in a good betting rare, but; ho could not handle tbe going, siul after, be-' ginning fairlv well, rcas soon some lengths from tho leader, Clontarf. Los Amfnii made an. effort turning for . home, but sprs.w'ed badly, and in doing so interfered with Ths Harp. The latter could not have beaten the winner, and none of thos© behind Clontarf were ridden right out over, the last hundred .yards. Different tactics were ado-ote.l with Mountain Lion in the Autumn handicap, and instead of taking'him to'tM front, r.rnsrson allowed tbe. Mountain Krii<iht pelding to drop in behind his field at the end-of a furlong. The plan worked ' well, and when asked ho came round his field and won ei3ily. Atavhaven stayed on better than Gay Juliet, but both were tired horses at the finish;, and cvin more so were Ravenna and Happy Days. Ravenna stopping to a walk in the last furlong.

The Beaeonsfielrl Hack 'Welter was a good hotting race, and Kilris Wound up a j.ood favourite, with Coch-y-Bonahw, Forino. Ophir, and Shandre a!sa well backed. Alt fivo gave their supporters a good riin, but the favourite had to go down to the improving. Cooh-y-Bondhu and Ophir, who appreciated the heavy going. Kilris, on the inside, did not get an oprjort unity to swing out at the bend on to the firmer going, and this to somo extent- meant the loss of at least second dividend to her supporters. Solway showed improvement -on his first day's form, and on soft tracks will bo useful, though in this race he failed in the last half furlong. Golden Prince monopolised tho betting in the Wai-iti Steeplcchaee, and for the greater part of the journey looked like landing the dividend. He Was a tired horse with six furlong 3 to go, and Anrore -went on to win well. The winner carried plenty of condition, but wft.3 evidently more forward than many thought. He jumpod perfectly, arid to this Owed much of his success. Kipling was improved by his. run on the openingday, and came from some way back to get second money. "Whipcord was run out at the fence down the straight. The San Francisco gelding may have been dangerous at the pace set had" he kept goina:, for he was with his field more quickly than is usual with hini. Blue Streak struck one or two fences hard, and T. O'Connor, his pilot, did well to keep his s*«t. The Cerise and Blue gelding hardly rose at the sod wall, aud, was down on his nose, for eome yards past the fence.

Gold Brick's opponents in the Temuka Hack Handicap were made up {or the most part by horses ho had defeated in the Electric Stakes on the first dav. with the exception of Loid Leslie «nd Mountain Kosc, from whom he wis receiving weight. Lord Leslie vras made a good favourite, but follower* of 0. Emerson on the day already had had two, wins, and they again went solidly for his mount, who was a good second favourite. Gold, Brick did: hot begin quite, so well as on Friday, but was quickly ,into a good position, and drawing away after turning for home, he won' easily. Olympia stayed on well and kept Fairy Herald out of second position. Soltoe and Mountain Rose ran fairly well, but Lord Leslie faded out badly. Strongbird was ono of the early leaders, but failed to run on, and on this form is not much good. Some Abbey was never prominent, and, let.hi* numerous sup., porters tjown badly. Bon Hope was kicked at', ike post by Olympia. and, getting away slowly, never had a ohasce. For the fourth time during/the day Emerson handled a winner. This was in the concluding event, the Seadown Welter. Hi's mount was Su,n Up, who was a. good second favourite to Enaro. The lattftr 'was not produced on the first day, and in this event he was Bupported solidly. Happy Days ana Quality again gave trouble at the barrier, and Happy Days was left several lengths. The favourite also did not begin well, and his chance was almost hopeloss from the. first furlong. Kilbarry handled the going well, and from a. slow beginning did psijticularly well to get second money behind gun Up, who won easily. Quality earned. Mlb overweight to obtain the sftryicM of J, Beale, who, though placed behnd the field at the. barrier, got her and she ran a; creditable thivd. i Lleaborg again «hbw*d p*c» for four furlongs, and will improve with racing.

There waa comparatively little betting ort the .Eden Trot Handicap, and Real Guy'a reputation sent him out a> short-priced favourite, his investments' being mqro than a- third of the total on the .machine. Hvs backers got a. shock when they : saw that ihe_ did not begin properly, for he jumped away rather quickly and was struok undor the chin by the barrier. This unsettled him, and he failed to strike hia g*>t until thoy had gone over two furlongs, by which time he waa last .but one. Then his task looked impossible, but he settled to his work in earnest and with a round to go was in fourth place. Over the last half-mile he ehowed a i great turn, of speed, nnd entering the straight was third. Tiki broke in tho final stages and was beaten for becond place by Roto, while Real Guy wont on to win, d«eiaivily 'by two lengths. It was a badly &trung<mt field at-the finish. Real'Guyjs performance was, a very impressive one Mr a., young trotter, and when more seasoned thq Ariierican-bred colt should take, high ra,nk among the performers. The Mangora Handicap brought out this bi? field of twenty-four starters, eighteen of whom were on the limit. A3 is generally the case.with such a big field, it wai noj?' a very good race, though it produced on. interesting finish. Sidelight and • Admiral Hood, bracketed, carried moßt money, with Koainiwood next, in favour. Admiral Hood was prominent in the early, stages, biit ha faded out when the pressure was applied, while Sidelight' ran a fair race into fourth place. Mount Albert was responsible for most of the pace, but though he stayed on well, Bawldy Locanda, beat him homfe by three-quarters of <v length. Bawldy Locknda, who js a eix-year-old gelding by Bren£ Locanda' from Miss Vera, is owned by Mr W, H, Wackrow, who is known in thf gab loping world as the owner of BraadWood. Tannhatiser, who finished third, is aj four-year-old gelding by Harold Dillon/ from Lady Tempest, and shows considerable promise. ■ ' j Locaada Mac, who had gone slightly lame,

was withdrawn from the Campbell Handicap it tho eleventh hour, and iu a vorj cvel jetting race Man o' War was made (just i it-tie better favourite than Hypo, with 1 Billj ica, Bean Dillon, ..and Kohara alinoat jcvenl) >ackod. Woodvale refused to begin pre* >erly and waa quickly out of the race, iohara went away in good style and tit the >nd of the first lap was showing thi way ya Goldman, Billy Sea, Sean Dillon, [Towel, Hypo, Glandoro, and Min o' War. jGoing iwng fho hack Man o' War put in a good run, but entering the last lap Kohanv was still in charge, with Dean Dillon, Billy Sea, Hypo, and Goldman nest. Wheni they reached the back stretch Hypo rated to the front, with Billy Sea in close pursuit, »nd they both headed Kohara. Hypo was unable to maintain his effort, and Billy t Sea- led into the straight. Kohari came' again with a, strong challenge, bub Billy Sea held him safe and beat Mm h*m© by a, good half-length. Jewel was a lenith nritl a half away, with Man o' War, who jlnished ■well, only "a head back fourth. Hjfpo was fifth and Dean Dillon, nest. Thel winner is an Australian-bred pacer, who las undoubted speed,- but has previously lost his chance in several races by refusing to leave tho mark. A. Hendriksen has- evidently improved hi» manners in this repebt, and drove him an excellent race. Kohara. registered a capital performance and showed himself a genuine stayer. Battery Bell, Herbilwyn, and Marhle Hall were sciathced for the Easter Handicap, and Bicolour was very solidly bucked, carrying nearly twice as jfruch money as Maggie; Pronto, who was second favourite. The result showed that there were good grounds jfor the confidence shown by Bicolour'e bnckjers, for, except for a brief -space when Nippe» headed her, she led practically all the way, and won. very comfortably. Buz Buz was always prominent, but Nipper outstayed him at the finish. Bicolour is owned by Mr J. A. Mitchell, of Palmerston North, who also owns Billy Sea. Bicolour, like the Campbell Handicap winner, is of Australian | breeding. i Double Event, *s was expected, was made favourite for the Cornwall Handicap, but he was eSoy in striking his gait ama, having to cover a lot of «xtra ground when he did get gains'. w»s, be»ten into third place. Bronie Patch was quickest to tegin, "but he vrae unable to hold his position, and Nelson Faroe and Florrie Bingen took up the running. Florrie Bingen was first into the straight, but one of her sulky wheels had been damaged early in the race, and this must have proved a. handicap to her, »nd in the circumstances she did well to finish second. Hue Coronndo was close tip fourth. First Cmrbine fifth, a»d Nita Bell sixth. Double Event was not disgraced by his defeat, »od it will be surprajn* jf he does not win before the meeting closes. The Hobson Handicap gave backers * surprise, as Reliance, wha won comfortably! was one of the outsiders of field, and paid nearly, a quarter of a century, "Whetu, a, good favourite, was one of the leaders for a mile and a half, but she found the dis-

{ante 100 fir for h?r and was well bcaien at the finith. The winner is an aged geldin? • v Gold Bell, and j.acod very solidly throughout'. Heather Girl put up a good performance in second place and King Lear's display shows that he is not altopother a back number yet. Syringa, who came with a gcod reputation from TaranakiJ' shaped fairly welkin finishing fourth. Rose. Bingen. who was favourite i'er tin Stewards' Handicap, gave her supporters lit(lo cause for anxiety ov.r the final circuit, as sh_<? was in third plac? with a round to go and. taking charge •soon after that, won very decisively. Roi Aito was always one of "the leaders, but R:se Bingen had' too snnch "aC2 f-.'r h:'m over the fiiiai stage;. Lady Xan was responsible fcr the pace in the early stages and was in front with a round to go. but broke before entering the back stretch, and then dropped right out of the race. AI Mack rfciyed on well in third place, while Pete Peter lost ground iu the first mile. Pyramns, who was fifth, ju?f- behind Pe'.e Peter, did not stay too well. The winner, who is owned and trained in Taranaki, is a six-year-old mare b.Nelson Bir.gcn from Hose Elect, and is a, tretter of more than ordinary merit. Rock Hinton and Syringa wore -scratched for the Marconi Handicap, for which Brendo and Bun Buz were almost evenly backed. Brcndo a supporters were quickly out cf their suspense, as his driver W. Orange was thrown frcm the sulky immediately after s trio start. Buz Buz, Rcckaway. and Uncle Bert were the earlv leaders, but. with a round to go Nelson McCorruack took ch^.Tga, and he led until the -straight was reached, when Master Councillor challenged him and, keeping him venned in on tho rails, beat I hint by a neck. Nelson Derby was close '"up third, and behind him came Hari- | cot, Lord Minto, and Buz Buz. I SECOND DAY'S HANDICAPS.
