The popularity of Madame Tussaud's, which was recently damaged by fire, is well illustrated by a story which Sir Henry Irving told with great gusto against himself. He employed the same cabman to take him to the theatre each evening. One day "cabby" told him he had never seen him act, and the actor gave him five shillings wherewith to get pit seats for his wife and himself. Next day Irving asked his' Jehu what he thought .of him on the stage.' "We didn't go. Seeing as it was my missus's birthday, I arst her which she'd rather see—you or Madame Tussaud 's, and she said she 'd rather 'ave the waxworks."
