S.I. MAIN TRUNK.

THE RIVAL IfcOiJTES. PROGRESS LEAGUE'S COM- , MlTtEfe'S ftSPORT. The special committee set up last yeaf by the Canterbury Progress Ldaguo to investigate the comparativo suitability of the rival routes to link tip the gap in the Bouth Island itfain Trunk railway line, has completed its labours, and its report is to be submitted at the mooting of the exeouth-o of the Leagiie on Wednesday etching. The League's committee has made a thorough And impartial examination of Goth routes. _ It will be recalled that in November last tho members of the committee went over both routed and took evidence m dirtorence centres in respect of the adrantages of both routes, and, generally, made every practicable effort to ascertain all the available facta bear* ing on tho subject. The result is a very comprehensive report, to which is aitaclied a map showing the routes, and incorporated with which are several pages of illustrations of the country that will be opened up by the completion tsi the line. At last week's conference in Inveicarftill of representatives of South Island Progress Leagues, considerable interest was manifested, especially by the Marlborough and Nelson delegates, in the Canterbury League's report, and indications arc not wanting that tho publication of tho report will create widespread interest in the subject in the .South Island and, in a lesser degree, perhaps, in the North Island. Tbe factthat the committee's investigation was conducted on thorough and impartial lines will eive the report more weight than would hare been the case if it had been carried out in a partisan spirit, gome idea of tbe general interest shown in the subject is giren by the fact that the League's organiser has received requests from newspapers in different parts of the Dominion to be suppli*-J with copies of the report as soon as it i 3 available.
