HOCKEY.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The Canterbury Hockey Association's competitions commenced on Saturday last. Tlie senior games were evenly contested, each game ending in a draw with two goals each. Following are the results: St. Albans (2) v. Selwyn A (2). The opening stages of the game were taken up in short attacks by both sides. Selwyn were the first to gain a distinct advantage, "but Soper cleared well. Shortly after, Preston put Selwrn in a good position and centred to P. Richmond, who opened the score after drawing the goalkeeper. Tho reverse put St. Albans on their mettle and repeated onslaughts on tho Selwyn goal were made. Hale initiated a piomising attack which Morris defeated. Several attempts to score by the St. Albans forwards were stopped by Bobb. The determined efforts of the Saints were at la*t rewarded by Franklin finding the not, making the scores even. Selwyn attacked and J. Squire was prominent in a run which was stopped by Templeton. Selwyn came back but Soper fielded and started the St. Albans forwards moving, headed by Hale, who centred to Franklin, enabling the latter to find the net. Selwyn livened up and put St. Albans on the defence, half-time coming with play in St. Albans circle, and the score: St. Albans 2, Selwyn 1. „ In the earh- stages ot the second spell, St. Albans had the better of the game and held play in Selwyn ground. The latter fina-Uy worked their way clear and got to the Si Albans scoring area where Soper cleared well upfield. Quartermain was prominent in putting St. Albans in a scoring position, but Hore cleared the danger. Play was transferred to the St. Albans end and a spell of midScld play followed. 3. ij&juirc gained possession at half-way and beating all defence, scored easily. St. Albans 2,- Selwyn 2. There was no further score. Mr il. Throp was referee. Selwyn B (2) v. 'Varsity (2). At Hagley Park, 'Varsity made their debut in senior hockey by meetin- Selwyn B. 'Varsity immediately " attacked, out Crawford sent play midiield. ■ arsity came through, a twenty-five resulting, and then another 'Varsity forward rush enabled Ford to open tho scoring. Selwyn took a hand in the attack, and after S. Beil had had an unsuccessful shot, M. Hill spoilt tho movement bv being offside. Play went to tho 'Varsity twenty-five, but it soon returned, and Holland narrowly missed wilh a good shot. From a corner hit, M. Hill put in a stinging shot which Mackie cleared, but S. Beil followed in and equalised the scores from close range. Selwyn were now showing improved forward play. Stead secured on the edge of the 'Varsity circle but he hesitated too long. The 'Varsity custodian stopped a stinging ehot from S. Bell. FauLk.ncr stopped a shot, from .Strack. and Ford secured and notched 'Varsity's second goal.

Ford put in' a good run for 'Varsity, then' S. Bell was prominent in a, solo effort for Selwyn. At half-time the score was: 'Varsity 2, Sciwyn 11 1. 'Varsity secured a penalty corner, but Strack's shot went wide. A corner to 'Varsity saw Holland shoot over the bar. The Selwyn forwards broke away, S. Bell equalising ithc scotch. In iv 'Varsity attack, the balli went into the net, but the shot wm iroiri outside the circle. Piny was in the Sehyyn half when time was called, with the .scores: 'Varsity 2, Sehvyn B 2. Keferea: Mr 11. Gracie.

Technical (2) v. Sydenham (2). Sydenham met Technical at Knsor's road. The game, opened with even up and down play. Then Sydenham conceded a corner, hora which Gracie opened the scoro for Technical. A minute or so later Tongue netted with a gocd one for Technical. A period of even play followed. From a penalty corner, Holland opened Sydenham's Ecoro 1 . with a good goal. Tho samo player just missed goaling from another penalty corner a little later. Just be;ore half-time, Hewiiison, for Technical, had hard luck in not finding the net. Half-timi score: Technical; -, Sydenham 1. Early in the second speil, Technical attacked strongly, but the resulting shot at goal was unsuccessful. Harvey, the Technical goalkeeper, stopped a hot shot from a corner. Play row ranged evenly up and down; tho field, though Technical just missed goaling 0 1 twi occasions.
