LAND BOARD.
SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Canterbury Land Board was hold at the District Lands and Survey Offico on Wednesday, when therowTjre present: Messrs G. H. Bullard (chairman), R. Macaulay, D. Stowell, R. Fi Henderson, and T. G. Gee. The following applications for transfer of Crown leases wore approved Section 82, Cbertsey township, 6 acres -3 roods 10 perches, William Gibson to John Blair. Section 9, Block 13, Waitakl, "Waikakalii," 50 acres, John Rule Sewell, mortgagee of W. H. S. Paulin, to Edward Patrick Lavery. Section 12, Block 6, Christchurch, "Tamai," 1 acre, Sarah Jane Martin, in the Estato of Robert Dempsey (decoased), to ,William Dempsey. The following surrenders of Crown leases were accepted:—P. Smith, of Seadown, notified his intention to surrender his interest in O.L. 2397, 50 acres, being part of the Opihi riverbed, Block VII. of the Arowhenun S.D. John Ruby applied to surrender miscellaneous I saso of Reserve 952, town of Waimate, 2 roods S7 perches.
A fossil tree, seventy foCt long, and estimated by scientists to be at least 1,000,000 years old, lias been unearthed in the Asansol mining area 6f Bengal. The fossil has been transferred to tile Indian Museum, Calcutta, where it will be studied by geologists.
