MOUNT SOMERS. After being literally on the tiptoe of expectancy, Mount Somers residents' hopes of having glassworks established were dashed to the ground by the announcement that they were to be erected at Ashburton. Still, it is satisfactory to note that the raw material lying around in thousands of tons will be thus utilised, thus helping to make up for the closing of the stone quarries. Also there will be a prospect of getting the tramway renovated, of which it is badly in need. The proposed exhibition of glassware made of silica sand should prove attractive in the Ashburton bay Of the Dunediu Exhibition. It seems that the glass company formed in Australia, after lying dormant for a -ong period, has been reconstructed, and is now a New Zealand company. Tha option has been taken over six acres near the Ashburton railway station, and construction of works there will commence in the near future. By November 200 men will be employed, and later it is hoped to double this number. The proposal to erect the works at the sand mine has been abandoned, but the mine should prove a busy spot locally. As the number of "candidates for the Mount Somers Road Board did not exceed the vacancies, the following wer? elected: Messrs T. Bright, J. W. Comyns, M. C. Harper, J. R. Lochhcad, and E. J. Waugh.
