MAYORALTY RECOUNT

COMPLETED.

A commencement, was made by Mr Albert Freeman, Assistant Ecturniog Officer, and staff yesterday on tho official recounts and checking of tho rolls in connexion with Wednesday's local election polls. Tho recount of the Mayoral election papers was completed last night, the official result being as follows: — J.K.Archer .. ..9071 ,T. W. Bcanlaud •• 43 6r> J. A. Fleshor ( . • 8050 J.Hamlet .. ..IM2 Informal .. •• 310 Total votes cast .. 22,945 The majority in favour of Mr Archer was, therefore, 1021. Council Election. A commencement was also made on tho recount in connexion with the election of city councillors. This will bo continued to-day, and may possibly be finished this evening. ADDITIONAL RESULTS. AUCKLAND. New members on the Council are: — J. W. Court, C. F, Bennett, M. J. Coyle, L. A. Eady, G. Brownlee, and E. J. Phelan (labour). Eight out of tho ten labour candidates were unsuccessful.

The election of five city representatives on the Auckland Hospital Board resulted in the return of the four sitting members and ono new member, Mre E. A. Kidd. The voting Wallace 9654, G. Knight 7944, J. Dempsey 7764, Mrs E. A. Kidd 7690, W. A« Thompson 5952. The following Mayors have- been elected; —Onehunga, Lomaß; Mount Eden, E. H. Potter (unopposed); New» market, Donaldson (unopposed); North* cote, Deuxberry; Birkenhead, E. Q. Skeatea (unopposed); Mount Alhert, li, E. Bhodes; Takapuna, J. D. Morlson; Devonport, T. Lamont; Otahuhn, Todd (unopposed); Avondale, W. J. Tait. On the Harbour Board, the four vacancies will be filled by Messrs Bloodworth, Inder, Johnston, aM Murray./ Owing to an error in the ballot papers a fresh election will probably bo neees* sary.

The Waitemata power loan was carried by a 853 to 1188, Takapuna and Avondale carried all their loan polls. The' voting on the Auckland civic square proposal was:—For 4487, against 527 G.

Tapley has been elected unopposed as Mayor. Two councillors have been replaced. Labour, with a full ticket, got only one candidate (Mr Macmanus) returned to the Harbour Board. , OTHER PLACES. Nelson—The Mayoral election result' cd—-W. Lock (sitting) 1499; H. Coltman 987; T. W. Forster 72. Gore—For tho Mayoralty D. L. Popplewell 701 was re-elected, defeating D. M. Thomson 482. Whangarei—For the Mayoralty, J. E. Holmes defeated L. J. Brake by fifty votes in a poll of 2000. Otaki—An unusual feature of tho Borougli Council election was that only one of the previous Council (Mr O'Bourkc) was re-elected. Tauranga—a poll was taken aa to whether the Council should continue running pictures in the Town Hall as a municipal enterprise, or whether the hall should be leased. The result was 618 votes for lease, and 333 for con tinuance of municipal control.

AUCKLAND'S NEW BfAYOR. (flPßcui to *'«■ nus.") AUCKLAND, April 30. . The new Mayor, Mr George Baildon, is an Aucklander by birth and upbringing. His father, Mr William Baildon, who died a few years ago, came from England in the ship Whirlwind in 1559, and after following the gold rushes on the West Coast, in Otago, and at the Thamee, settled in Auckland in 3877. Mrs Baildon, sen., who came to New Zealand with her parents in 1863, is still alive, and is well known among the older generation of Aucklanders. Mr George Baildon is one of seven sons, and is a builder and contractor by occupation. He first caine into prominence in the public life of Auckland in the days of the old Arch "Hill Road Board. For a period of four /years he was a member of that Boaw, and was chairman for one year. In ifeOJK he was returned as a member of thje Grey Lynn Borough Council, and remained in the service of the borough till its amalgamation with the city of Auckland in July, 1914. For the last three years of that period he was Mayor of Grey Lynn, and on the amal-
