RANGIORA. Mr R. Mcintosh, the Mayor-elect for Rangiora is a retired farmer, and a brother of Mr H. Mcintosh, Mayor of Kaiapoi. Hb farmed for many years in tho Loburn district, and has had considerable experience on local bodies. He has been a councillor for the past four years. the request of the members of the Rangiora High School Board of Governors, Mr F. R. Callaghan, who i was at one time first assistant master j at the High School, came to Rangiora j yesterday afternoon, and delivered an j interesting and instructive lecture on : his impressions of the Wembley Exj hibition during the time he was reprej senting the New Zealand Government j as officer in charge of the Agricultural and Pastoral section. Mr Callaghan J also gave his impressions of rural Eng- • land, and the Continental cities. Mr j R. Ball, chairman of the High School j Board, presided, introducing the speaker. There was a. large attendance of parents and pupils, and at the close of the address the Principal, Mr J. E. Strachan, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Callaghan. This was seconded by the chairman of the school council arid carried with acclamation. AMBERLEY. At a recent meeting of the Amberley Athletic and Cycling Club Committee, it was decided to present trophies at the end of tho season dance. A medal • match is to bo played on the Amberley links on Saturday, and the following is the draw;—S. Frew and W. Ehodcs, H. James and J. Mayo, 0. Johnston and C. W. Brown, J. Sivatton and G. Grierson, A. Parkinsov. and Dr. Thompson, J. Oxley and G. Falton, W. Parsons and V. Rhodes, Rev. Harold and C. Eedpath,. C. W. Bowcn, and J. Hendren and E.'Shier.. CUST. A meeting of the * Tennis Club committee was held on Wednesday evening, at which it was decided to hold a euchre drive and dance. A challenge to play a match at an early date was received from the Ohoka Club and accepted. The following have been selected to play for the. senior football team against Glenmark at Cust. to-morrow: — Gartny, Campbell, Wayland, Sail, Gartny, Ellis, Hack, Watkins, Leggett, Stevenson, Burgers, Cowans, McDonald, Bush, Henderson (capt.), Forbes, Brunsden. The .junior team have a bye. . A complimentary social evening was tendered to Mr W. McLay on Wednesday, on his departure from Cust. Although not resident long in the'district, Mr McLay has become very popular. Euchre and dancing were the order of the evening, the card tournament being won by Miss Rowe and Mr Ted Tallott, with Mrs W. Rowe as winner of the booby prize. After supper Messrs S. Smith, _ C. The school was crowded to its utmost capacity on Wednesday evening, when friends of Fernside and surrounding district assembled at the' farewell social tendered to Mr and Mrs A. ,F. Johns ,and family. A euchre tournament and dancing were held. Mrs Holliday and Mrs Hewitt tied'. for the lady's^prize, and the men's prize was awarded; to Mr. Woods. After supper Mr:W. Smith referred to.the esteem ?in which Mr and Mrs Johns were held in the district, and the keen regret everyone felt at their departure. He then asked them to accept a silver tea and coffee service and oak tray.. Mr A. M. Carpenter also spoke. Mr Jas. Johns, on behalf of his brother, .-who was unable to be present, and Mrs Johns suitably responded. Dancing was kept up till the early hours to music by Mr A. Hunhibell, with Mr G. Power as master of - ceremonies. HORORATA. The annual reunion of the returned soldiers was held on Friday night, when about 45 members gathered to renew acquaintances and spend a convivial evening. A lengthy toast-list was honoured.' During the evening songs and stories were contributed by Messrs G. Keith, Willsteed, J. Spence, J. McFarlane, and Pascoe.- A feature of this year's reunion was the music supplied by a party of visitors from Christchurch, including Messrs Johnstone, Kidd, Welsford, Gopper.th, McDowell, Moir, and Fitzpatrick. KIRWEE. At the annual meeting, of householders on Monday evening the following new committee was elected:—Messrs W. Frizzell, chairman (re-elected),'J. McKie (acting-secretary),. P. Gill, A. Stewart and S. Dunn. At the re-opening of. the school on Tuesday morning there was a splendid response, 51 children being present. The weather for the past week has been remarkably mild and even warm, with no sign of frosts. | >Mr Boyd Stanley, who has been local stationmaster for over four years, has been transferred to a similar position at Arthur's Pass. On Wednesday evenI ing he was given a social in the Agricultural Hall. There was a largo attendance, demonstrating the esteem and appreciation in which Mr Stanley was held. ■ Both he and Mrs Stanley will be greatly missed in- the district, and they take with them the heartiest good wishes for their welfare. Mr Stanley was presented with a valuable set of cutlery. During the evening song.'i were sung by. Mesdames A. Anderson and Browing. Music for tho dance was supplied by Mr S. Dunn.

HORNBY-ISLINGTON. The Islington Welfare Committee held their fortnightly euchre tournament in. the Islington Social Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance and prizes were awarded as follows: —Ladies' first prize, Miss Mary Fuller ("Pyrex" dish); ladies' second prize, Mrs G-. Earnshaw (Sunshine purse); men's first prize, Mr A. Bennetts {pocket wallet); men's second prize, Mr Worsley (stainless pocket knife). The aggregate prizes for a number of past euchres were awarded to Mrs C. Lennox (Doulton teapot, sugar basin and jug), and Mr A. Bennetts (suitcase). The Hornby Dance Assembly hehl their weekly dance in the Orange Ha'll, Hornby, on Wednesday, evening. The music was supplied by Smith.'s Marimba* Band and Mr C. Sutherland carried out the. duties of M.C. Among those present wcre: —Mrs Webb, Mrs Baker, Mrs C. ELLESMERE. The quarterly meeting of the Springston. Methodist Circuit was held in the church; There was a good attendance of members. The Bev. J.' W. Parker presided. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £sl, the membership roll 154, with Beveral removals. Home mi 3-' sionary services will be held during May, when the Eev. A. J. Seamer and Maori party will visit the circuit. Appreciation of the good work done by Mr and Mrs Hansen was placed on record. It was decided to hold leadership meetings throughout the circuit. Letters: of sympathy were sent to Mrs Beaven in the death of her husband, and to Mrs ' Dale in her sickness. ROLLESTON. • The Eolleston'Hall was the scene -of a most enjoyable evening on Monday last, when Mr and Mrs S. Jeffs* entertained a number of. friends in honour of their daughter Nellie's . twentieth, birthday. The evening was spent in dancing and games. The music fov the dance was supplied by Mr 11. "Wall, and extras were played by ..Miss Thefona "White. . At supper the usual toasts were proposed. WOODEND. At the first annual meeting of the "Wooden d Progress League there was a good attendance of members. The president, Mr D. P. Mahoncy, presided, and gave a summary of the work done by the League, which" included the levelling of the Beach road at the beach, and eventually the telaying of the centre, track, thereby enabling motorists to get much closer to the water's edge. Also the establishing of sheltered parking places for motor-cars beneath the shade of the pines, the cutting and clearing of a fine pathway through the lofty pines on the North Shore, as far, as Wbale Gap, enabling sightseers to get a very fine view of the Sanctuary Lagoon. Tliey had also raised moneys by way of concerts and subscriptions, which they have used in many advantageous ways for the benefit of the residents and visitors. | The League had also sunk a deep well, which was much appreciated .by campers,, erected seats,. swings, placed a double fireplace into the end of the Shelter House, and planted two rows of poplars. The concert, got up by the League to raise funds for the Library had been a success. The president impressed upon members the necessity for taking a continuously keen interest in their League, and suggested that a strong working bee should be got together for the purpose.of digging out the bed of a good-sized swimming pool on the school grounds, and approach the Government for a subsidy to procure building material and cement to complete the work. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, the Hon. D. Buddo, M.P.; president, Mr D. P. Mahonev; vice-president, Mr D. Stalker; treasure'r, Mr T. Lewitt; hon. secretary, Mr W. Smith; executive, Messrs Herb. Nicholson, N. Cutter, J. Jelf, H. Judson, •and G. Dransfield. The president eulogised the services of the secretary, Mr W. Smith,, and a very hearty vote of thanks to that gentleman was carried by acclamation. . SELWYN HUTS. Although the workmen have been engaged at the outlet of the la.ko ; there are no signs of the water lowering in the vicinity of SeJwrn Hate.
