THEATRE ROYAL.
"SAN TOY." Again iast evening the Christchurch Amateur Operatic Sotfety successfully produced the musical comedv "San Toy" at the Theatre Koyal. The production is an ambitious one for an amateur company, but the success which is being attained on this occasion must surely prove gratifying to those responsible for the staging cf the piece. The quality of the -work throughout is fine, and altogether the show is thoroughly enjoyable. As a spectacle, "San Toy" 'leaves little to be desired. Its Oriental atmosphere lends itself admirably in such a connexion, and the scenes are a wealth of colour. The scenery and wardrobe, considered from all angles, are excellent, and provide a feast for the eye. They were previously used in the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society's production. The plot of "San Toy" is "of the love of an English officer for the daughter of a Chinese mandarin, and of the experiences the couple go ihro'igh before they are allowed to marry. There is a lot of Oriental scheming done and for a time San Toy, who is the daughter referred to. Dasses as a boy.
